USAirways To Fly FLL-BDA

Fri Mar 07, 2003 10:04 pm

Depending on governent approval, USAirways will offer Saturday non-stop service between Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood and Hamilton, Bermuda between 7 June 2003 and 3 September 2003. If succsessful, the A320 service will become year-round and likely with increased frequency during the summer. It is about time that Miami had non-stop service to Bermuda! USAirways chose to fly out of FLL as opposed to MIA because they will not be paying any landing fees for the new service. Hope USAirways luck!

Interesting to see US expand out of FLL, they are really snatching these leisure routes. Im prety sure the flight should work out since this will be the only nonstop service between Bermuda and South Florida, and they have the added convenience of an exemption of landing fees.

Thanks for the PR link Scotty. I have no doubt this flight will be a huge hit, and will not be surprised to see it make it year-round (and I will also not be surprised to see AA file for MIA-BDA if USAirways makes this a serious, year-round attempt). It's about time South Florida and Bermuda got connected! In addition to plenty of O&D to fill an A319, there's all that traffic that Tyco can bring. Tyco is an international electronics conglomerate (I am not even exactly sure what they do, but they are a huge multi-billion dollar company) based in Hamilton, Bermuda, mainly for taxing purposes. Outside of that, however, most of their operations are done out of the Miami area. That should help fill up F easily. The Bermuda Government is guaranteeing the sale of at least 60 seats per flight.

Good news, until the repo man shows up. Did US restructure the missed payment already on some of their A319/A320 and A321 aircraft leases? They have another two days to rectify the leases? Hope so, or maybe they will be de mothballing some aircraft out of the dessert?

What's the O and D on the FLL/MIA BDA runs now?

The missed payment was for 5 A330-300s. It was for restructuring purposes, and has obviously been taken care of.

The missed payments is posturing...and like I stated above they paid them. Here is the press release from U:

ARLINGTON, Va., March 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- US Airways announced today that it has made payments on its 2000-1 and 2000-3 pass through trust related to Airbus aircraft. These payments, totaling $64.2 million, were due on Feb. 20, 2003, and March 3, 2003, respectively, and were made prior to the end of the applicable cure periods.

This includes both the 320 Family & 333 aircraft.

It would not surprise me to see American respond with MIA service. Its been brutal for us to get to Bermuda from So. Florida, particularly in the winter. Usually, through JFK or BOS. The DL service through ATL is not convenient for a business traveler. Kudos to USAirways, but we need daily service to BDA from either airport.

US will probably be happy with the results and increase it to a daily service eventually

Very true. But AA will very likely respond with MIA-BDA, and AA has the upperhand in this market, which would probably limit how many flights USAirways can offer (I don't think AA will kick them out). Lucky for US, the US/Bermuda billatteral is extremely restrictive.
