Sat Mar 08, 2003 6:06 am

I see a couple of 737's inbound to VCV, is Southwest starting to store some of their aircraft?

A friend of mine flies for WN, and he says they're taking 12 new aircraft this year, and retiring five of the oldest 73-2s

Nope, they were charters. VCV is a popular place these days...  Big grin

To correct what was said earlier, SWA is actually taking delivery of 17 new 737-700s, and retiring 6 old 737-200s, for a net gain of 11 aircraft in 2003.

I presume the old -200s will go to MHV, but that's just a wild guess.

Just to reinforce the point, the information about the retirement and delivery schedule that OPNLguy gave is correct.

IIRC, the last of them will be gone in 2005...

Southwest has 3 -200s at IGM (Kingman) at the moment. These planes were returned to the lessors, so it's very doubtful that the aircrafts will see service again. Regards.

Why is VCV popular for charters? CRAF flights?

WN has been doing lots of charters for the military to VCV since last summer. The military's big desert training area is just outside VCV.

I'm guessing WN is doing just domestic military charters. Thats odd because all the CRAF flights Ive heard are widebodys or a few ETOPS 757s

Southwest, like many other airlines, have taken new delivery a/c, and parked them in the desert because they've had no need for them. Boeing has even parked green a/c out in the desert due to now buyer for the a/c.

Southwest is no longer parking new planes at MHV. The have all been placed in service. The VCV flights are military charters, confirmed by a freind of my who works at WN.
