O course, as a result VARIG will suspend the GIG-MIA flight along with some other Latin America destinations such as Bogota, Lima and Caracas.
They are not suspending MIA
, in fact they are increasing frequency next month. What they are doing:
Gone are all of Salvador's long-hauls. MIA
was already cut a while back, and by the end of March Paris, Frankfurt, Milan, and Madrid will be cut. Gone also are Salvador-Recife-Lisbon, Rio de Janeiro-JFK
(last flight was yesterday), and Rio de Janeiro-Madrid (already cut). Belem-Manaus-Miami will become Rio de Janeiro-Manaus-Miami in April; Rio de Janeiro-Sao Paulo-Miami will become Curtiba-Sao Paulo-Miami at the beginning of May.
Currently, Bogota is operated 4x a week. Only once a week is it non-stop to Sao Paulo with a 762, the rest of the week with a 733 via Manaus. Caracas is 4x a week non-stop with a 762, but it would become CCS
, like it has been recently, before being cut.
Of course, I miss Varig during it's heydays. I remember when they served Miami from no less than eight destinations: GRU
, MAO, BEL, SSA, FOR, REC
, and CNF
. Now it is four, but with much less frequency.
