Varig 767 Seized At MIA

Sat Mar 08, 2003 10:14 am

According to Justplanes.com a Varig 767 (pp-vnn) bound for Rio was seized on March 6 at MIA. The aircraft is leased from GECAS- the flight to RIO was canceled as a result.
It is sad to see a once powerful airline fall to such a point - first a 777 and now a 767, what will they do not fly to International destinations to try and keep their planes.

Not again? First it was PP-VRB, now it's PP-VNN. What is going wrong with VARIG?

Varig is struggling financially . They also cancelled the 777 order . Thats why they need to merge with TAM . Anyway , they have been looking to get rid of the 767s . They can code share with TAM using TAM's A330 .

-sva, it is a well known fact that Varig is struggling very badly and have returned all thier B737NG on lease, cancelled outstanding orders of their B777 etc. They are indeed looking to merge with TAM and getting rid of their B767 could be part of their fleet simplification plan in case they do merge with TAM.

How do the CSA's explain this one to their customers? "We're sorry to announce that flight 8815 has been....repossesed?"
Also will we get to see this on an episode of "repo man?" (yes, this show actually exists....it has a format similar to COPS, I had to see it to believe it.)

Aroundtheworld,

Good point. I bet they just call it a mechanical, no one knows the difference. Rebook all pax and wonder if Rule 240 applies? Interesting quandry?

A good way to get rid of aircraft you do not need or want? Just don't pay for them. I wonder if US Airways is watching? Wait 'till this begins to happen, they have two more days left to resolve the lean on a loan for some Airbus aircraft A319's/A320's and A321's.

When the repo man starts picking them up, US is going to have a very bad day indeed, a new code (WX - weather, MX - mechanical...) FX - repossesed.

I would assume they would treat it like MX and 240 everyone over to United - which presents the interesting potential for your plane to be repo'd twice in the same day  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

ATW...

Oh that is too funny (sad)... what a bad day, be rerouted over to UA, then to have the repo man show up there...? Oh no. What I have learned in the airline industry, is never, say never.

When a widebody is repossessed do they just put one of those clamps on the wheel like they do in New York and leave it there or do they send the repo man and a flight crew, all armed to the teeth, to take possession of the plane?

The B767 is already released and Varig may use the aircraft for a while. However Varig will return this aircraft and 5 other aircraft to GECAS

I'd come up with a more interesting method. Putting it on a barge and taking it through the Panama Canal. What do you think?

Dismantle it so you can put it on a Beluga and fly it back  Smile Eventually with these ideas it will have been cheaper for the title holder to give them the thing.

Actually VARIG now has decided to return all of their 767-200s to GECAS as a retaliation for the seized in MIA. They were planning to return those aicrafts gradually till June. Looks like the 767s are gone!!!!!!!! O course, as a result VARIG will suspend the GIG-MIA flight along with some other Latin America destinations such as Bogota, Lima and Caracas. RG stil has 6 767-300 that are used in some flights to Europe and Latin America.
I don't know when 3 MD-11 will be returned though.

UN B732: I believe it was on TLC (the learning channel), if not it was one of those type stations. I watched it a couple weeks ago and it was hysterical - in one case they repo'd a guys huge yacht from the canal in front of his house. I have looked on tvguide.com and on tlc.com and can't find anything on it, however I am positive I saw it - my roomate and I laughed for an hour about that show. While interviewing the guy who got the yacht he mentioned taking a small airplane. He didn't go into how they did it, just he said it was very challenging...

I didn't realise that Varig was in such a poor financial state, I've heard about the merger with TAM to form a new airline, but I haven't heard any of the details. How is TAM doing anyway, they seemed to be pretty successful financially at least until recently.

Actually, MarkAir had some of their 737s taken when they were struggling.

The financing companies that owned the aircraft had a court order to retake their equipment for non-payment, and U.S. Marshals helped the company representatives padlock the towbars to the nosegear to render the planes immobile until they could arrange a crew to ferry it out.

O course, as a result VARIG will suspend the GIG-MIA flight along with some other Latin America destinations such as Bogota, Lima and Caracas.

They are not suspending MIA-GIG, in fact they are increasing frequency next month. What they are doing:

Gone are all of Salvador's long-hauls. MIA was already cut a while back, and by the end of March Paris, Frankfurt, Milan, and Madrid will be cut. Gone also are Salvador-Recife-Lisbon, Rio de Janeiro-JFK (last flight was yesterday), and Rio de Janeiro-Madrid (already cut). Belem-Manaus-Miami will become Rio de Janeiro-Manaus-Miami in April; Rio de Janeiro-Sao Paulo-Miami will become Curtiba-Sao Paulo-Miami at the beginning of May.

Currently, Bogota is operated 4x a week. Only once a week is it non-stop to Sao Paulo with a 762, the rest of the week with a 733 via Manaus. Caracas is 4x a week non-stop with a 762, but it would become CCS-MAO-GRU, like it has been recently, before being cut.

Of course, I miss Varig during it's heydays. I remember when they served Miami from no less than eight destinations: GRU, GIG, MAO, BEL, SSA, FOR, REC, and CNF. Now it is four, but with much less frequency.

I think retaliation for their own stupidity is kind of stupid and it isn't really going to bother GECAS very much as it'll save them the trouble and expense of going to get the aircraft themselves. They're probably applauding the decision.
