Alaska Replacing Horizon On Some BOI-SEA Flights

Sat Mar 08, 2003 10:59 am

Alaska will place 2 MD-80 aircraft on BOI-SEA starting June 8. The change will replace 3 Horizon flights, leaving Horizon with 5 RTs on the route.

No word on which flights will be switched so I have no idea what type of aircraft Horizon is taking off the route, CRJs or Q400s. I wonder what plans Horizon has for the aircraft freed up.

With what basicaly amounts to a QX hub at BOI, I've been wondering if/when they'd do this. I wonder if this works out if they'll add AS BOI-PDX flights.

I'm still wondering what exactly is the point of the BOI hub?

Is it mostly an O&D type hub or was it designed as an alternative to SEA and PDX?

I'm still puzzled....

I flew this same route in Jan. with a QX CRJ-700. It was a very good flight and a very good aircraft. I am suprised AS is going to fly MD-80's on the route. Does AS fly to Boise from any other cities. When I was in BOI all I saw was QX aircraft.

I was looking through SABRE today and apparently AS hasn't updated the flight in SABRE yet....Which is uncommon for them (they are usually on top of that)....Perhaps EA CO AS can shed some light on this????

I don't see any of MD-80 on June 16th between Seattle and Boise. Where did you find out detail about this service?

Here it is:

check website at: http://www.alaskaair.com/shopping/schedule/schedDisplay.dll?DisplaySchedule

You type date and select city then you will see list of the flights.

So does Alaska and its partner run banks out of BOI?

I dont really know very much about thier BOI operation, just PDX and SEA.

It seems like a small town to run a "HUB" out of, though I hear its a beautiful place.

According to the press release:

I'm guessing it's based on the timing of the press release. It was released internally around 3:30pm on Friday, and the guys in scheduling have had so much on their plate lately (new Orlando service, a 2nd Newark flight, LAX-RNO, ANC-YVR) that they probably simply overlooked sending the schedule change through.

Odds are it'll be updated no later than Monday. AS usually doesn't like to publish a schedule in Sabre prior to a press release being sent, though. It's done that way to avoid telegraphing their intentions any earlier than absolutely necessary, although the Orlando announcement was such a non-surprise that the schedule had been published in Sabre about 8 hours prior to the official press release being sent.

Just read the employee newspaper (the March 7th Alaska's World) where it talks about all the new flights and schedule changes and looks like something slipped in which hasn't yet been announced or put in Sabre. Looks like Alaska will take over Horizons PDX-DEN flights starting June 8th. This means that Horizon will no longer be in Denver. It did say that QX might return in the fall so it might just be a seasonal adjustment. No info on type of equipment Alaska might use on the route.

I'm assuming 73Gs or 734s. Although an MD-80 would indeed be a pleasant surprise.

Alaska right now has 3 daily flights from SEA on 734s. A 4th flight is being added next month that will operate on a 734 for a month then switch to a 73G.

I wonder what they will do with the CRJ's they used for the PDX-DEN route. Will they be put on new routes?
