Germanwings To Expand To A New Hub

Sun Mar 09, 2003 7:27 am

Justplanes reports Germanwings will expand their fleet by 3 or 4 aircraft and that they'll announce their 2nd hub before the end of the month.

Does anybody have an idea what the 2nd hub will be?

I heard mumblings that they are considering a hub in the UK. Manchester perhaps? Think they would have tough go with taking on LH there though!

germanwings says that the 2nd hub can be a German airport or an airport in eastern-Europe. And after this announcement its impossible that an UK-Airport will be the 2nd hub.

Germanwings? A hub in the UK? I wouldn't hold my breath...

First of all, the UK is exceptionally well-served by low-cost airlines, with hubs all over the place (East Midlands, Stansted, Luton, Gatwick, Cardiff, Leeds, Prestwick, Bristol, .....)

Secondly, the German market is still under-served, so Germanwings would do very well to build up hubs inside Germany (as HLX is doing).

Hmmm. Does Berlin have any low-cost airline services yet? Wouldn't that be an ideal hub?

You can add Manchester to your list. bmiBaby announced MAN as a new hub last month.

@ Ikarus

I think Germany is in few month over-served. We have now 4U, HLX, FR, U2 and DI. Both germanwings and HLX have problems to fill their planes on the most routes like Paris, London and Berlin.
The Czech republic or Poland have no LCC and together with the announcement from germanwings that they will open a 2nd hub in eastern-Europe
(or in Germany) its more than secure that the 2nd. Hub will be an airport in eastern-Europe.

And now a small info to your Berlin-question.

A few weeks ago Berlin had a LCC called Berlinjet. But Berlinjet had many many problems and now Berlinjet has drooped operation with their MD8.. The MD8.. was the sole plane in Berlinjet's fleet. But the management says that Berlinjet will come back.

There were al lot of rumours that it might actually be Stuttgart. This would certainly make sense to me.
It's a rather rich and big region down here with no other low cost carrier (Ok, except DBA to TXL/NCE).
Also interesting that LH just recently cut it's route STR-CGN. Maybe 4U would take this one over.

Don't think it'll be MUC. First of all that's a main hub of LH and second of all MUC is expensive.

PRG would be kinda cool but I guess it's STR this time.

I predict EZY will open a Prague hub soon enough considering it's already a focus city for them.
Warsaw for Germanwings?

Warsaw for Germanwings?

Not a chance. Until the Polish Government allows low-fare carriers to undercut LOT by a substantial amount, you won't see a budget airline in Warsaw. Even British Midland wasn't allowed to compete to any great degree against LOT, and BD pulled out of Poland as a result. Germanwings wouldn't be given the time of day.

What about Hamburg/HAM as second hub, because HLX added its second hub in Hannover/HAJ...

And HAM isn't expensive as Munich...

What do you think?

I think Hamburg will not be the 2nd hub. I remember that germanwngs said: if we will open a 2nd hub in germany it will be an airport in southern-germany.

Germanwings has already narrowed down the possible candidates to Berlin, Stuttgart and a Swiss airport. The announcement was made on the ITB which currently takes place in Berlin. I guess Berlin would be a logical choice since Germanwings had already applied for slots at TXL for a number of routes - but with the current expansion of Air Berlin and Germania and TXL and the arrival of Ryanair at SXF, I would not be surprised if Germanwings will give Berlin a second thought and set up a base at Stuttgart or in Switzerland instead. Switzerland is an option now because of the bilateral agreements between the EU and Switzerland; Germanwings could, however, only serve EU destinations from a Swiss airport.

@ XQ737

FR at Schönefeld seems to be likely, as there are three daily flights SXF-LTN operated by Buzz at the moment. So when Ryanair is taking over Buzz, they might continue this route.

The base in Switzerland could be Basle or Zurich then. I suppose Basle is offering extremely good deals for LCCs if they open a base there.

Backfire,
Poland will be in the EU this time next year and they will not be able to interfere too much especially as the spotlight will be on the new members of the EU.I have my doubts as to whether Poland fully embraces some of the EU's membership prerequisites but that's for another forum Smile
Good to see that competition is better at Prague where tourist numbers are also increasing quickly.
