What Does 'Lingus' Mean?

Wed Mar 12, 2003 1:12 am

I've always wanted to know what 'lingus' means in 'Aer Lingus'.

Answers and comments will be appreciated.

I think it means "hangover" in Gaelic.

Seriously, I heard it means fleet...

Lingus means fleet - the English translation of Aer Lingus is Air Fleet. Originally, planes had 'Aer Lingus - Irish International' titles but this was shortened to 'Aer Lingus' when the 1980s green/blue stripes livery was introduced.

I asked my mom...she lived in Ireland for 30 years and her brother worked for them. "Lingus is the latin word for bird". I wonder if that is right.

I have flown them since birth, the only thing I remeber is trying to pronouce it at 4 years old!

Lingus is the latin word for bird

Nice try...but no. The Latin word for 'bird' is 'avis'. In any case, the closest word in Latin to 'lingus' is 'lingua' which, of course, means 'language'.

Thanks for all the replies.

Originally, I thought it had something to do with a Shamrock but obviously I was WAY off the mark.

Hi!

I definitely don't know, but it sounds like something that you do between your wife's (or girlfriend's) legs with your tongue.

I'd like to give it a try!

Interesting replies, but Aer Lingus actually means Air Fleet in Gaelic.

Flot is Fleet in russian. That is why Aer Lingus is so similar to Aeroflot. The meaning is the same. But Aeroflot beat them too it. Aeroflot is one of the many Flots in Russian there is "Morskoi Flot" NAVY or some other Flots. Speaking of Flots, I was recently in Moscow, and I saw a store called Elektroflot with the same font as the Aeroflot logo.
