Air Canada Considering Canada-Athens Service

Today, several Air Canada yield management were travelling to MSP for some kind of a meeting.

In any event, the question arose if there were any other destinations that could be announced this summer, given that Italy/Lebanon services were just recently announced...

The woman, (who's business card says head of scheduling  Big grin ).. says that they have been talking about Athens for over a year now.

Air Canada, is thinking of a 3 weekly service from each of YYZ/YUL to ATH...

Do you think such routings would be viable?

Why are they going to MSP?

Anyway, ATH is another low yield market. AC flew YYZ-ATH briefly in 88/89.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

I too got the impression it was a pretty low-yield scene. How has OA done on these routes in the past. (Gosh, are they even still flying to YUL? I'm so out of touch lately...)
Next flight.... who knows.

Airlines like CSA/Olympic make huge business from shuttling Canadians to the middle east via their hubs..

The biggest destination for OA beside ATH, is CAI... PRG is BEY.

And now we have war....

But thats because those airlines are entirely geared toward that type of business....there is no route that CSA flies the 310 on that isnt primarily low yeild vacation traffic....If the "Air Canada Sun" brand ever comes into being, that is the all economy 767-200 leisure product then Athens, as well many other European destinations would work very well...Lisbon, Prauge, Budapest, Warsaw, Kyiv, Berlin, Nice all come to mind....As for a regular ACA 2 class layout I think it will be tought getting the loads up, especially with Olympic already being a big player on that route...

So last summer was the year of widespread domestic Tango service, and this summer seems to be expansion on Trans-Atlantic routes. I noticed that at least for the new YUL-FCO, that it will be served by a domestically configured 763 with Super-Comfort (i.e. 2-2-2) layout and regular economy. While Athens is low-yield, a domestically configured 763 could do the job since it seats more than an internationally configed 763. Yet with the impending conflict in the Mid-East, I think we'll see international air travel drop dramatically, and therefore having an Athens route this year probably wouldn't be a wise idea. I say increase capacity in Canada this summer, since domestic air travel shouldn't decline as much as internatinal air travel.

Well if OA don't make it till next year,will AC either?(common factor will kill them both off although IMO it's very inevitable in OA's case anyway,and quite a lot so in AC's.)

This route is very low-yield though.Most of OA's losses come on their long-haul routes AFAIK.
