"This is like a seasonal lull period for SIA. The year-on-year comparison looks weak because there was a lot of pent-up demand last year post September 11," Mark Tan at UOB Asset Management said.

"The war is coming. That's the reason for SIA's slide," Seah Hiang Hong at Kim Eng Ong Asia said.

Some investors were concerned about the outbreak of SARS in Asia. "But I don't think it would have a significant impact on the overall business," said Seah.

I suppose this is 'not satisfactory'. Whats gonna happen, analyse data from other sources and see if they match while your waiting for your sanitary towel tests to finish. J/K.

Suppose this is why SIA are downgrading their MAN-SIN service to 772's instead of 744's.

Yes, thank you for those sarcastic reactions / comments.

As to Manchester Ringway - Singapore Changi services with Singapore Airlines, the 772ER now makes the two cities served non-stop without stopping in the shite of an airport - Mumbai (which incidentally has recently received funds for a major, and needed, revamp).

BApilot2b: Actually, the "downgrade" of MAN-SIN to 772 isn't a reaction to poor loads, but rather a response to demand for nonstop MAN-SIN services with quick cinnections to Australia. Currently the daily 744 flights operate via BRU, ZRH or BOM. Current loads do not justify a nonstop 3-class 744, hence the introduction of 2-class 772s.

And the other thing about the introduction of 772s on SIN-MAN is that it represents an increase of around 30% on available capacity. Typically the 747s have around 200 to 220 passengers on board on arrival/departure from MAN.

To echo David_itl: Currently SQ operates 7x/week 744 with 378 seats each flight. Assuming 50% of seats are allocated to downline stations (CDG, ZRH, BOM, BRU), that means that SQ has a net seat capacity of 1,323 per week.

With 4x/week nonstop 772 with 285 seats, and 3x/week one-stop 744, SQ will have a net seat capacity of 1,707/week. That's a 29% increase. Not to mention the extra cargo capacity.
