I did this flight on 11 August 1995. Flight number was BA
8872, operated by the Islander G-BNLJ.
We paid 12 GBP oneway for the ticket Kirkwall (KOI) -Westray (WRY) -Papa Westray (PPW) and stayed in a B&B at PPW.
Flying times were :
KOI-WRY scheduled 08:40-08:52, actual 08:47-09:00 (13min)
WRY-PPW scheduled 08:59-09:01, actual 09:05-09:06 (1min)
Total time including the stop : 19min
Well, someone asked for a trip report, so here we go (from my memory and the notes in my logbook) :
When we arrived in the little airport building in Kirkwall, we went to the BA
/Loganair Checkin. I was more than surprised to see that the checkin staff didn't only put our bags on the balance, but also asked us to step on the balance. Have never seen before that they weigh the passengers on a flight! According to our weight we got boarding passes and were placed in the aircraft. Luckily I was light enough to find myself on the Copilot's seat (the Islander is only operated by one pilot, so I sat just next to him, with a yoke and pedalsin front of me... ). The flight over the Orkney Islands to Westray was very nice, although too short. At Westray, some people disembarked and others joined. Just as in Kirkwall the pilot turned around for his sefatey announcment (no stewardess to show the emergency exit
) and then gave a short briefing for the flight : "The flying time to Papa Westray will be err...(looking at the windsock) on minute". And well, the flight was indeed only 70 seconds, at an altitude of 300 ft.
The airfield at Papa Westray is only a grass field where he approaches according to the wind. A little hut with a bathroom-style balance is the terminal building. I will see if I find my photos again, maybe some of them might be good enough for a.net.
