Air India 744 Overflies KWI After Missile Attack

Fri Mar 21, 2003 3:30 am

An Air India Airbus Boeing 747-400 inbound to KWI from Jeddah was forced to overfly Kuwait after wandering into a missile attack while attempting to land there today. The incident occured at approximately 430pm local time.

The aircraft continued directly to BOM where it arrived safely at 1030pm local time. No injuries or damage to the aircraft were reported. Initial reports are that the aircraft was not targeted specifically but simply was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Air India will fly a special A310 extra section to Kuwait on Friday to pick up the passengers stranded as a result of this overflight. The airline is operating 5 extra sections to Kuwait today to cope with the additional demand, in addition to the regularly scheduled 3 flights.

In other news, passengers on the extra section flights out of Kuwait today staged a demonstration at Mumbai airport in protest against poor baggage handling. Air India was forced to leave a number of bags behind due to a breakdown of the conveyor belt at Kuwait airport. The flight had to leave before the belt could be fixed because of crew duty time restrictions. The passengers are demanding compensation from Air India for the inconvenience.

Iraq did fire about a half dozen of those banned missles that he doesn't have at US troops in Kuwait today, One reportedly was blown up by a Patriot battery and one broke up enroute.

Well at least he can claim that he destroyed them as per the UN mandate.

-437B,

How did the pilot get into that area? I would have assumed that the area would have been NOTAM'ed or that controllers would have vectored the aircraft away from the combat zone. Or did the missles suddenly start flying in that area?

Air India 456

Actually, it was Air India 806  Smile

How did the pilot get into that area?

Flew? Big grin

No idea about the specifics of the incident. I heard about it through the AI grapevine, but it obviously wasn't very serious 'cos the media hasn't picked it up yet.

Instead of operating a separate Airbus A310 extra section to KWI today in addition to the regularly schedule flight, Air India will operate a single flight using a Boeing 747-200.

AI 859/858 will operate with the following schedule :

BOM KWI 21/1500 1640 AI 859 747
KWI BOM 21/1740 2340 AI 858 747
