KLM 747-400 To Be Used On AMS-PBM

Sat Mar 22, 2003 1:39 am

Well just read the Surinam paper and yes, KLM will get rid of their 747-300. Starting in May, KLM will increase their flights by one more, so now operating on all days of the week except Saturday. Surinam Airways which is working with KLM wants them to use PBM as a stop, so flights from AMS can continue on to Brazil/other countries in S. America. Well, this is cool. And now the 747-400 will start ops beginning next year....
I guess there is so much more demand from people on the AMS - PBM and vice versa route, they want to increase it...(Time to drop the Fares too)
Hope all goes well for both of them. I guess for now the A330 / 777 are out of the question, but i still would love to see one of these boys at PBM.

Here is the article (in Dutch) : http://dwt.net/Archief/2003/Maart/21%20maart%202003/Suriname%20als%20tussenstop%20voor%20vluchten%20naar%20Zuid%20Amerika.htm

Thanx for posting Anair80,

I heard the news about the increasement of the PBM flights yesterday....but the use of the 744 and possible continuation to Brazil/other countries is new for me....would be a great development for the aviation and tourism industry in Suriname, if this is really gonna happen.....

The fares are still a hot issue....they will give some low fares only during the period the new flight starts until the big summer months are coming.....I'm still waiting for official news regarding the possible Martinair ad hoc operations for Dush & Cadushi travel.....hopefully this new development in the Suriname aviation industry will bring Suriname closer to a open-skies agreement for all Suriname-related air traffic...so not only the Caribbean! And if we're still dreaming......what about a expansion of Jopie Pengel? Big grin Especially that dirty arrival hall, It's been 2 years ago since I went to Suriname for the last time.....in that time, anything new happened with that arrival hall?

Cheers!

What's wrong with Jopies arrival hall? Very charming  Smokin cool I thought when I visited in 1999. Had it not been for the nice KLM lady in AMS forgeting to priority tag or bags we would have been out of there in 15mins rather than 90

Hey Danny,

Yep, that means you have not been there a while, Cause the arrival hall got a nice face lift. I also have not been there in year but from what I hear back home, Things have certainly changed. You now wait in a nice air conditioned area for passport control and as you come from the plane to that check point, you can see the meeters/greeters through a nice long window as you would walk from the plane to the passport control area. I also believe they got a new baggage belt and made it a nicer area, or they at least have a better system, but that I'm not positive about. I'll double check that.
Also regarding Martinair, I think it is still a go, but they are still waiting for the formal approval of the cat I status, and have the government implement that. The government is so afraid for independent airlines to come to Suriname and just operate for a couple of months and then go belly up (money is a big thing), and leaving a mess for the government to clean up. They are very cautious with that...
I'll try to pull some strings and see what other info I can get from my dad who may have some new insights into this.... Hopefully he does...
Ohh man, I certainly can't wait for the 7474 to come next year... It'll be so nice to see a more modern plane come in. Well on the other hand those flight engineers will be laid off, so that is not a good side of it...

so flights from AMS can continue on to Brazil/other countries in S. America.

One large Dutch touroperator searches for an airline to fly direct from AMS to MAO (Manaus, Brazil).

.....I'm still waiting for official news regarding the possible Martinair ad hoc operations for Dush & Cadushi travel

Martinair hasn't made any application which suggest they'll fly to PBM this summer (at least their slot requests at AMS don't point in such a flight).

As for the B747-400. If this is true one destination will loose the B747-400. Given it's unlikely that KLM will use a B747-400M for AMS-PBM flights, the following destinations can loose a a few full pax B747-400 flights: JNB, NRT or KIX (probably AMS-JNB-AMS as CPT will get their own B777 flight).

The government is so afraid for independent airlines to come to Suriname and just operate for a couple of months and then go belly up (money is a big thing), and leaving a mess for the government to clean up. They are very cautious with that...

Martinair an independent airline?????????

Martinair is not an idependent airline, but they will be working with a couple of travel agencies who are independent. Sorry, This is what I meant. Look at when ITA (Inter tropical Aviation) was flying with Citybird from Brussels, or American Trans Air with Sky Liners, all of these went belly up, but the airlines did not. Citybird went out of business, but ATA did not. I'm not saying that martin air will got bankrupt, Who knows??... but they are stable " right now" but the government does not quite trust the tour operators/ surinam charter operators.. I guess....
as for losing a 747400 to the PBM destination.. that is what I would call time management/ operations management... They will by then hopefully get the 777/A330.. So they will replace the lost 747400 on a given route and replace that with a 777/A330.

 Big grin

I would be eternally gratefull if KLM decided to continue from PBM to La Paz Bolivia (LPB).

Not only would they be the first non-american carrier to fly into LPB, they would also do me a huge favour, because I have to travel over there all the time and it is pretty difficult and expensive to get there under 24 hours.

Yep, that's true Anair80. Authorities in Suriname are a little bit suspicious if it comes to charter traffic to/from Suriname, especially after what happened with Inter Tropical Aviation and their so called "bankrupcy". But from my point of view, Does & Cadushi is a reliable travel agency and they have the skills to accomplish a new route between AMS and PBM. They are quite succesful with their holiday packages in the Caribbean and Suriname. And co-operating with a reliable Dutch airline like Martinair, it would give future costumers and sponsors a lot of confidence for a succes as well.

As for the arrival hall, good to hear it has improved a bit. I must confess DC9; The old arrival hall has something romantic though  Big grin, but my memories with the old arrival hall aren't that good....you've mentioned the waiting times. Well, add stolen baggage, a temperature 20 times higher than the average climate in Suriname because of no airco, and a lot of argueing with those stupid military policemen with it.  Yeah sure

Well, at least I'm glad things are slightly changing in Suriname, and I can't wait to go back.....unfortunately not within the next 2 years. I will be heading for Australia upcoming summer, but hopefully when I come back next year.

As for the possible onward destinations, Surinam Airways only mentioned Fortaleza, Manaus and Recife as possible destinations. But you'll never know what will happen in the future. By the way: is there some kind of market between Bolivia and Suriname?

Cheers!

I read an article on KLM's staff magazine (Volkenridder) that the reasoin why the airline charges so high fares is because is a one way traffic. Peak holiday seasons flights are overbooked and then quite empty. Is it correct?

Also since its a code share. Do they carry Surinam Airways personnel onboard? any sign of this airline?

I know when flew KL/PY 713/714 back in 1999 they had SLM cabin crew and a captain on the inbound leg to PBM who was an SLM employee.

Does anyone know if PBM got the extra fire tuck they needed or if KLM is still flying in there on a special deal. When I was there they were not sure if KL would continue their flights because of the lack of fire equipment but obviously they have.

Yes, I believe they did receive that fire truck. They received two from Holland, I think that was about a year and a half ago. But I'm not positive about that.. I think I read about that in the paper. I guess if they had not received the trucks they would have long ago stop flying to PBM.
About the crew, yes Surinam Airways crew is trained and prepared for the KLM flight. I think what the two airlines are doing is that they are sharing the cabin, both KLM crew and SLM crew. Sometimes the Surinam cockpit crew does fly the plane. I think there are two or three 747 pilots working for SLM. and a couple of FOs'. On flights it is sometimes a Dutch crew coming to PBM, and out going it is a Surinam Crew.
What I also heard from some people in the industry, is that KLM contracts SLM crew to do the inflight cabin service. Comparing the Dutch to the surinamese crew, the surinam crew obviously is much more cheaper to pay. So they have a couple of KLM crew with overall SLM cabin crew onboard.
I think that makes sense. If the airline wants to save money use the cheap labor.
Personally I think the Surinam crew is far better (esp. on this route, they know the Surinam people their culture so they know alot more)... and ofcourse i think they are much politer than the Dutch. The Dutch may have the looks and ofcourse its their airline, but the surinamese crew have the attitude and spirit which most people on that flight are looking for (unless there is an annoying passenger onboard that makes their life pretty miserable). "No offense" but that is a fact... I have seen it for my self a couple of times...  Big grin

Not only firetruck, they also have some old Dutch buses...they look a bit like the old buses they still use for buffer traffic at AMS......I saw them 2 years ago at PBM.....

So the airport has been trough a transformation.....how about the road between the airport and downtown PBM? Have some pretty weird experiences with that road as well....  Laugh out loud

It should be as a judge ruled that fares on the AMS-PBM flight are not unreasonably high due to higher cost associated with running the AMS-PBM flights (and KLM used this in its defense). During the case KLM also pointed out that PBM doesn't generate much capacity, the flight has higher security costs and the cooperation with SLM is also increasing cost.

Yep, The airport has been through A nice and small transformation...
At least the bathrooms are in working condition, and the baggage belt is working too!!!
The arrival hall is nice and cool, and it is soooo much cleaner!

Well about the road? It is still as bad as before, just a few holes have been closed, but for the rest it is still as the old. The only thing that has changed on that road is that it is fully lighted. There are bright street lights going all the way from the city to the airport. That is one good thing. The other bad thing is that the road is still as narrow and bumpy as a few years ago. I think the road workers from china were going to redo the whole street. But that I'm not so sure about...

Looking forward to a whole new road and more facilities at the airport.
How about some more flights!!! So people can start hanging out at the airport all day!!! Or like in AMS, the cool Mc Donalds next to the runway and near long term parking!
Ohh I wish PBM could change to something so much bigger and nicer!

 Smile

Hi Folks,

I was there in Februay this year. Yeaphh the departure hall seems new to me,
clean and good airconditionned but for the check in they opened only 1 counter an that for lets say 500 passengers!!! So guess how long the check in time was??? It is realy worth to visit that beautyful country filled with a lot of friendly people  Smile/happy/getting dizzy Anair, I tried to make a shot of their MD87 ?? or 80 ??
but when we arrived the aircraft was parked half in their maintenance hangar
and it was almost dark. So I got a picture of two but have still to develop the film! If they are ok then I will post you the pictures, ok? At our departure the MD was not there anymore! The road is still in a bad shape behalf of a little part of it where they renewed the tramac!

The flight was as on a 747-300 with a mixed crew of KLM and SLM staff.
I will return next year but then hopefully in one of their cute 747-400 maybe a
dream but maybe not, who knows?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I hope SLM once will get the opportunity to operate their own aircraft on the PBM-AMS route......

For a school project I created my own SLM not so long time ago...with PBM as a important hub, a big fleet and a quite extensive network Big grin, yeah...."keep on dreaming"; that's what a lot of people said to me afterwards.....well, I will just keep that dream....one day SLM and PBM will beat all main hubs and carriers in South America and the Caribbean.....just keep that in mind  Big thumbs up

Luxair,
Hope those pics come out alright. I hope anyone that gets a chance to take a shot TAKE IT!!!  Big grin
Ohh also how was it when you arrived? At the arrival hall? Was it also nice or not?
So, anyone know if the MD-82 is already in full service? I heard the crew was still training and so they have to charter other carriers to temporarily keep operations going!! Does anyone know about it?
I know my dad went to Brazil last week and SLM chartered a 737-200 (Crappy and old as hell... ) from RUTACA from Venezuela..

He said that was the worst flight he had been on for many many years...
So I sure hope that SLM will start flying that baby soon, and make some good $$$.
In my dreams: "Maybe they become so successful that they acquire their own 747/777".
One time I did hear SLM talk about leasing their own 767 / 777, when relations with KLM were not so good, that was about a year or two ago. But things seem to be fine now. For now I guess that idea is in storage for now...
Things that were also talked about, was that KLM wanted to operate their own service to and from PBM, and that SLM would have to go independently... But they are still together, so who knows what will happen.
Wouldn't it be nice, a 777 in SLM colors!!! WOW, am I dreaming or what!

DC9,
That is a very good question! I have no clue what the reg / name is..... I'll can try to find out.. but if I can find it, that is another good question..

KL713, WOW, the A340, that is pretty cool. What destinations did you have in your project? And what other cool planes did SLM have?
WOW, certainly keep that dream in mind... One day it can hopefully be a true national carrier of Suriname!!! GO SLM.... The current SLM manager is doing a pretty good job... he has certainly tried to bring SLM out of the red numbers .. and he should definitely get credit for that... But the future of the airline is now still a big mystery
BTW, did SLM in your project operate on its own or in partnership with others?

DC9, I'm for 100% sure that it was no DC9 what I saw on the Tarmac in PBM because the tail of that aircraft was
flat so the MD82 and the DC9 as far as I know have different tails ( I don't know exactly how to explain but you as an expert DC9  Smile/happy/getting dizzy know for sure what I mean)

Anair80, the arrival hal was older than the departure but it was clean and the only remark I have to do is that I was waiting for an hour ore more before getting my lugguage but who cares, I was on holiday so in enjoyed
looking at the people working on the ramp  Smokin cool

Mon Mar 24, 2003 7:56 pm

Maybe Anair80 or somebody else can help me out to find some information on this aircraft PZ-NAI, it is a Cessna 172M Skyhawk registered in Surinam. Why, because a family member of my died, crashed that plane in 2002 and died tragically in this incident. When I was in Surinam in february I went with his father (who works as
an ATC controller) to Zorg en Hoop to see the wreckage of the Cessna. We know that he got an engine problem and the investigators are still working on to get the exactly cause of the accident but when I came back to Holland I did some research on my own via Internet and I found out that this Cessna was already once registered under PZ-NAB and crashed but here comes the point it was repaired but nobody told us that. Now the authorities, they say the it was a Pilot error and the the aircraft was well maintained and even well checked before he flew out of Zorg en Hoop but I have my doubts about! The insurance company is also doing some research. Here just some more information, he flew out of Zorg en Hoop on 09/10/2002 and crashed near
Leonsberg, on the right shore of the Surinam river. He reported engine trouble to the ATC just before crashing
in the forest unfortunately he died in this crash! I want to know more about the first crash under the registration
of PZ-NAB apparently it crashed at Zorg en Hoop maybe in 81 and I want to know more about who repaired the
aircraft and how severe where the damage?

Thank you in advance for your help, I will appreciate it very much if somebody can give me a hint where to get more information.

Greetings
Marc

Hey Luxair,
Humm, about the crash I have no idea, I know I heard about it, and read about it in the paper online, but about the technical parts...(what plane it was etc... I really have no clue...) Sorry.. wish I knew more..

DC9, Ohh I guess then the dc9-51 was still there for a while to take care of some more SLM revenue, while the other crew was training for the MD-82. If you are sure, than that makes sense.
Well, I just wish SLM had a few more flights, where they could operate two aircraft.. just I wished.  Big grin

Well I got some more PBM - Joopie - Airport info:
I just heard, that PBM will be constructing a whole new departure hall, with 3 jetways/air bridges. Both the Arrival and Departure hall will then be connected and so the flow should be smooth. Those passengers transferring (a relatively small number) will be able to change without having to get out of the airport and go to the departure hall.
Well if they will continue with this plan they would need to built a nice hotel at the airport too. Especially if KLM will be using PBM as a hub in the future. But who knows what will happen.
I know the financing and other financial stuff is in the works right now, and will hopefully be handed in for approval soon. But things look good for the airport so far from what I hear. I guess they are doing this because in the very near future the gov. will probably approve the open skies policy, so anyone can fly in and out.
WOW, I sure do hope things turn out nice....
I'm waiting to hear for some more info about Martinair and the travel agents.. but for now nothing...  Big grin

Isn't Torarica good enough for the KLM crews?
I myself prefered Residence Inn. Even if soup of the day was tomato soup for 14 days  Laugh out loud

Yep, your right, Torarica is still good enough and it is still used for the crew, but because they are going to change the whole airport around and its structure to handle more capacity, (If the open sky policy gets approved) then they will be needing a hotel close by. Crews will probably still stay at Torarica, but for the conveniece of transferring passengers and others who don't want to go to town for a few hours layover... that i think will be the purpose of it.

Tomato soup for two weeks? YUK..... Didn't they have a suggestion box, for another yep of soup. How about some chicken noodle soup, or a nice Peanut soup or some Yummy Tom Tom soup..... Man do I miss that stuff... Have not been home for about a year and a half.
Well guess they had too many tomatoes that season they needed to get rid of... and guess what they made two weeks worth of soup...hehehe 9-p

Wow, that's great news about a new departure hall! Big grin The current departure hall is not that old, but if the amount of flights to/from PBM are really about to increase in the next couple of years, they have no other choice. All they need then is a hotel near the airport. Improve the road to downtown PBM...hey, maybe a spottingplace for us  Big grin

Anair80, as for my project:

I had the A340 in my fleet for operations to AMS, CDG and LHR, the 752 for North American operations except MIA (JFK, IAD, ORD, ATL, YYZ), the 738 and Embraer-145 for short-and medium haul operations (GEO, CAY, CCS, BOG, BEL, FOR, REC, SSA, MAO, GRU, GIG, POS, BGI, FDF, AUA, CUR, BON, SXM, PAP, MBJ, HAV, MEX and MIA) and there was a planning for operations to Orlando, India(both DEL and BOM), Singapore and Argentina.....is that a big dream or what?  Big thumbs up

Wow, this all sounds like an interesting dream project....
Yep.. we certainly need a good spotting place at PBM. Did you guys know about the road behind the fire dept. area. A road that runs along Runway 11/29? Uhh, great place to spot.. But unfortunately, sometimes I got kicked out of there by the fire truck brigade. They thought it was a safety hazard, and they say it is private property, well that is true, but safety hazard? No way, I can see they have never been to AMS and MIA!!
Sometimes my dad and I still go and see a couple of planes land. The best thing I have seen was when the DC9 of SLM had to land simultaneously with the 767 from Citybird. Citybird landed from rwy 11 and then as it was at the end of the threshold, he gave the DC9 the opportunity to land from runway 29 and which meant that the DC9 would be there sooner and the passengers would have been out of there faster... That was one AWESOME Double approach from both ends.....
The best action you can see at JOOPIE.
hehe 9-)
Well KL713, that plan will hopefully become a reality in the future!!! Great category of planes, and great destinations!!!
Just love it, but the best part would be, seeing it become a true reality. Also another good dream would be a nice place at the airport, where you can hang out with your friends and family, ad go for a nice bamie or nasie, or a great Tjauw Min, Hummm yummy, I don't really want to See burgers and fries, no give me the good stuff, like the Telo with Trie, or a big rotie, with lots of meat and vegies...
Now that is my kinda place I would like to hang out at....
Later guys...

Hey Guys,
Here some more updates...
Yes, the airport construction project will be a go, actually is already a go. They have already started building a new freezer facility for air cargo, for fruits and vegies to Europe and other places. This with the help of the Chinese government. So that has already begun. T
The second part is upgrading the ATC / Tower facility which my dad just confirmed, they have begun construction on that already....
Also said is that Martinair will only be flying during the busy summer season. I believe that will be with does and kadushi. I hear they only want to do that season, because of the high demand of air travel. Well, for the rest of the time it will be up to KLM/SLM to operate successfully.

Cheers...

Telo, Tjauw min, Roti.....now you're talkin! Big grin That would be the specialty of Jopie Pengel's fastfood facilities.....

but seriously, there must be some interest from other airlines than KL for possible operations to PBM...since tourism in Suriname is increasing by the year....if the construction project will be finished, there is a lot of capacity for other operators, what about airlines like Lufthansa or BA? For example, they can use PBM as a major stop for onward traffic to Brazil and Argentina.......

I wouldn't be surprised if I see new airlines coming to Suriname in the next couple of years if all the new plans really will become reality..... Big grin

Yep, Who knows...
We don't know who has an interest in coming to PBM. I hope airlines like BA/LH/ even any American carrier comes to PBM. That would be awesome. We would have so much fun spotting at Joopie... Well i guess if that happened, SLM would be under so much pressure, they might start to loose a lot. I don't know how they would handle that though. Any thoughts?
Well I too will be dreaming on...
Later...

Even I as a Norwegian dream of success for PBM and SLM. I wish I could relive my 10 day visit from 1999.

Oh, as far as Tomato Soup is concerned we skipped it and had dinner at Pizza Hut, the Korean resturant around the corner and an Indonesian further up on Anton Dragtenweeg (hmm excuse my spelling Embarrassment )

Anair80, maybe that's one of the main reasons the government refused some carriers in the past few years for flights to/from PBM....afraid of the position of SLM...which automatically refers to the position of the KLM/SLM partnership, a big moneybelt for the Surinamese government. I don't know how their financial position is right now.....but if the new KLM/SLM plans gonna work out well, the government could consider more possibilities for other carriers and PBM as a little hub....loose the SLM tires a little bit, more space for them to grow.....but that's not more than future talk, we can't do anything then just wait and see how the new KLM/SLM plans gonna work out in the upcoming seasons.....you'll never know....

DC9,

if you have any plans in the near future to visit Suriname....make it at least 1 month to enjoy....10 days is way too less (altough I understand because your dad had a main reason for visiting)....there is so much to see and do....you definitely will enjoy it!  Big thumbs up

Yep, DC9 and KL713,
Suriname is the type of place to stay abit longer than 10 days, Go into the forest and or Republiek a little. WOW, do i love that place... Have any of you been to the Mamba Project?? That is a great place to hang out.. It is right across from Bersaba.... really nice... I have a vacation spot over there, or actually my parents... IT is great for the weekends and nice to relax and sleep all day...
Ohh and when i know KL713/714 are ready to come in or depart, then both my dad and i go straigh to the place behind the Airport Fire Dept. To see the bird come in and Go. he best. I have my scanner with me, so i know when he is due or where he is. And mamba is just 5 min out, so if i here him come on the Paramaribo Control Frequency, Man i jump in th ecar and we go and watch the same bird land and depart over and over again... It is just so cool everytime.
Later....

Unfortunately, I never searched for good spotting places near Jopie Pengel....all my last visits were pure family and business trips.....the next time I will visit Suriname, I definitely will explore the area around the airport and go further south..... Big grin thanx for that tip about the area behind the Fire department Anair80.....

Hey KL713,
Just be careful, They Might kick you out if security comes around, or if the 747 comes in, they usually have the fire trucks on standby in case something happens. In that case what they do is, they come on the Horn, and they speak over the truck radio to tell you to get out of the area/ it is a restricted area. Just be careful.
They kicked my dad and I out a couple of times, but we don't really care. We still go back and still enjoy every landing possible.
The best thing to see is when a military charter comes in from the US to bring stuff for the US embassy. Ohh they sometimes come in with a the nice C-17 globe master or a C-141 starlifter or even the BIG Anotnov the C-5 Galaxy (I think if they have a lot of equipment/ military cargo.) One time I saw it fly over might have been the C5 or the C141, but I was unable to go to the airport that time. I saw it at my vacation place, Man was I pist that I could not leave. My mom had the car keys and we could not find it... I was furious....!!  Pissed

Well, I think they come once a month, but you just need to know when. I just happened to be around and I saw them turn overhead Republiek and then head for Runway 11. Uhh I still wished I could have gone and see that...!

Hope Things will change soon. When will your next trip be to Sranan?? Any time soon?

My next trip to Sranan...unfortunately: not within the next 2 years  Sad I will leave the Netherlands for Australia upcoming summer for about a year, with my backpack Big grin for what they call "a working holiday"....so when I return to the Netherlands next year...I first have to make some money, and maybe....if there is a possibility to get a job at AMS or as F/A with KL....I will return to Sranan as quick as I can......

SLM MD-82 Info

Fri Mar 28, 2003 6:26 am

Hey KL 713,

From what I saw a couple of months ago, SLM still works with Universal, but if they currently still do it I'm not so sure. Universal does not fly to PBM, but SLM brings pax to GEO and then the pax transfer to Universal to flights to NY.
Also... BWIA I think they are doing pretty good. I think they have more than 60% load factors, but about that I'm also not so sure. I could find out though.... I know they fly 3x a week and SLM about 4X
Well that is pretty much all I could find out..

Ohh I found some more info on that MD-82...:
  • Boeing/MD-82

  • Engines: JT8D

  • Reg#: N98876

  • Serial #49444

  • Yr Built 1986

  • Owner: Pegasus Aircraft Lease Securitization 1999-1

  • Hrs.: 45648

  • Cycles:23260

  • Cycle date: 30/11/2002

  • Status: In service

  • That is that info....
    Sources.. http://www.rati.com/index.htm
You need to be registered though. I do it through my school, so it is free! YEHH Big grin

I hope I can find and get some more info soon!!
    Later ..Anair80
