I've flown American Airlines MD-11s and DC-10s on SAN-ORD and ORD-ZRH, and am sure that they have used them on DFW-SCL and SJC-NRT

American used them on the HNL-LAX route. I flew in an AA DC-10-30 on this route in mid 1999.

DC-10's were heavily utilized domestically, hawaii, caribbean, and trans-atlantic initially. As AA took delivery of the 767, DC-10's were gradually phased out of smaller Trans-Atlantic routes. Eventually, the MD-11 and then 777 completely phased the DC-10 out of trans-Atlantic routes. In the Carribbean, out of MIA / KMIA), USA - Florida">MIA and SJU / TJSJ), Puerto Rico">SJU, DC-10's played a large role initially at MIA / KMIA), USA - Florida">MIA, but were replaced in many instances by A300's. Domestically, the DC-10's remained on high density routes and trans-cons until being replaced by more efficient 757's and 767's. In their final two years, the DC-10's primarily only served Hawaii markets. The oldest DC-10's were retired in 1993/1994, with the final aircraft remaining until late 2000.

At the end of their career, the AA DC-10's became dedicated Aloha birds flying:

Back in 1990 or 1991 (I forget the year) I flew from ISP-RDU-MCO on American Airlines. The ISP-RDU flight was on the MD-80, but the RDU-MCO flight was on a DC-10. On the return trip we took a DC-10 from MCO-RDU. When we got to RDU I found out that the DC-10 we were just on was going to JFK next, then on to London.

Then in 1992 (I think) I flew American Airlines from JFK-MCO, on the trip down we flew on the 757 but on the trip back (MCO-JFK) we flew on the DC-10. That plane too was going to London after a stop at JFK.

To answer your question about Miami, I flew an MD-11 from Miami to DFW in... August... 1991.

Also, that was the return flight from a trip that started with DFW to Orlando on a DC-10.

I had previously flown a DC-10 DFW-SJC in 89 or 90.

we got the MD-11 on the SJC-NRT flight for a while... I'm still perplexed as to how that thing is still around.

In the mid 90's when I was living in Austin, AA flew DC-10's between AUS and DFW.

I never saw one, and I lived right near the old Robert Mueller Airport.

I did ride an AA 763 AUS-DFW once, after hours of thunderstorms. I think the plane may have diverted to AUS in the first place.

American flew the DC-10-10 between IAD and LAX all the way through 1999. Also, I believe the MD-11 was flown between JFK and Santo Domingo initially.

Indeed AA did fly the DC-10 AUS-DFW Brons2. In several periods over 20 or so years. RDU and MIA had DC-10 service to almost every major city in the system.

Speaking just for my high school years when the DC-10 was brand new, AA flew them during the winter from TUS to PSP/DFW/ORD/PHX/LAX/SAN and SFO. This of course varied by year. In the mid to late 70s the ORD and DFW flights were year round.

If I remember correctly, AA originally flew DC-10-30's on the SJC-AA), Japan">NRT route. Problem was, at certain times of the year AA had to temporarily fly the plane from SJC to OAK to fully tank up on fuel before flying the AA), Japan">NRT. I believe that AA discontinued that practice once AA switched to the MD-11; one of the reasons why AA placed the 777-200ER on the SJC-AA), Japan">NRT route was the fact the 772ER could fly SJC-AA), Japan">NRT-SJC non-stop year-round without having to use that OAK diversion, especially now with SJC lengthening the runways.

Regarding AA's D10s and a bit of history, back at DTW in the late 1970s to mid 1980s (before NW started it's hub), AA was the primary carrier (or so it seemed).

I flew AA D10 "Luxury Liners" between DTW and LAX, ORD, and LGA. I also flew AA 747s between DTW and LAX. These were all non-stop flights. AA even had nearly hourly service between DTW and LGA, calling it "Flagship Express" service.

American flew DC10's between DFW and MSY until late 1992. I actually got to fly on one, flight 1447 routing MSY-DFW-PHX, and flight 577, routing ORD-DFW-MSY, in September of that year.

American Airlines used there MD-11's from Seattle to Tokyo-Narita a few years back before chaning it to a 777-200. American Airlines no longer flies the route but I am sure it will be back in the future.
