Finnair: 1200 To Be Fired

Tue Mar 25, 2003 9:37 pm

Company says that at the same time as the expenses are going up, the rates are, due to competition, going down. What competition? On maybe 95% of its routes, it is the only carrier available.

At the same time, the Finnish government authorities have have given an ultimatum for Ryanair to change its rate-based advertising for the company's new Tampere (Finland) - Stockholm run. Well, Finnair is a government own entity. Coincidence - yes, of course.

Hello

Are they going to cut flights and routes? If so do you have any idea which cities will be affected?

As always, FFlyer has a tough time dealing with reality. Yes, FFlyer, these are tough times for most airlines, even those with a majority of the business in its home country. Read a newspaper, why don't you?

No news yet on any route cuts. More likely that frequencies will be cut than routes, but of course, there is a limit of how few routes you can have to a certain destination until there is no point in flying there anymore.

Ticketor; this issue (AY cuts) has not been mentioned on this site, and therefore I believe a topic about it can be created. I guestion the reasoning, though. Rather than price competition (as according to AY), it might be just a general lack of passengers due to economy and war.

Has Finnair given any comments about the Far East travel advisory? After all, that is the area where the company has invested heavily lately and might find the news about pneumonia somewhat sensitive matter.

I have to smile at the issue of competition, I mean if you take a major route like London it's a real old style cartel. SAS has made headway in a limited way and definately have their sites set on Finland but it's hardly a major major issue. Mind you not wishing to be rude, but Finnair from my experience is a second rate product, so they are vunerable to people like SAS. It's sad for those about to loose their jobs, having just spent quite a bit of time there it becomes obvious very quickly Finland is hardly the easiest place to find work.

1200 To Be Fired

I wish to complement FFlyer on his use of the word FIRED.

Not laid off, furloughed, canned, axed, let go, etc...but FIRED! No beating around the bush – I like that!

What competition? On maybe 95% of its routes, it is the only carrier available.

95% of the routes - that is one hell of a monopoly!

95% of the routes is far from accurate. While 100% is true for longhaul and almost the same for domestic, of the mainline European routes only London and Paris - and some less important ones - fall under the cartel of Finnair & partners. Well actually, the lowcosts are challenging AY-BA on London, so that leaves Paris.

I mean, Finnair DOES dominate the market here, and heavily so, but what is this crap about "95% of the routes"?

Fired is the wrong word. You can only be fired if you're guilty of improper behaviour or substandard work at a company. The people at Finnair are guilty of neither - they will be laid off or their positions will be being made redundant. There's a big difference.
