Tenerife: 26 Years Ago

Thu Mar 27, 2003 12:28 pm

That terrible day when Two Boeing 747s collided on the runway was 26 years ago. March 27, 1977.

A moment of silence for the 583 who perished.

As Serge put it,
Yet another year.
It seemed to me that this year passed ultra quickly...
But I am sure that for many people that lost relatives or friends 26 years ago, this year was still one that not a single dya passed without thinking about that day....

At least for the rest of us , let us offer a moment of silence.

I hope that next year all of us here will be ok as well.

Regards

Not the greatest of pictures but eerily ominous, in hindsight, considering what happened one hour after this picture was taken. PF-BUF in the foreground and N736PA (coincidentally, the first 747 in passenger service with PA on JFK-LHR) in the background...

I still have the diagram of the incident from a newspaper report. Truly a sad and shocking tragedy. Let us all hope and pray that something like this never happens again.

I flew out of TFN - Los Rodeos Airport in Tenerife last month on an Iberia A340 to Madrid and must admit I really found the airport very eerie. Of course, at the forefront of my thoughts was the crash and the victims. I did observe a silence in memory of the souls lost when I was there. A very moving experience.

A very moving testimony to a very horrible accident. To the souls that perished that day, May They Forever Rest In Peace, Amen.

A moment of silence to the 583 who died on that terrible day in Tenerife. May they rest in peace and their loved ones find solace and comfort on this anniversary day.
