Bmi To Fly To DBX Or CPT/JNB

Fri Mar 28, 2003 6:40 am

In the next few weeks, expect bmi british midland to announce a new long haul service out of LHR to either DBX or CPT/JNB? The service will be oporated by the on loan A330's and services should start in October.

I dont know if this is linked to the planned service, but there are a number of posters and adverts of an egg hatching with the titles, "something big is about to happen"

Thanks,

Aaron

Wasn't Virgin planning to fly to Dubai soon? So BMI will be competing either on South African routes, or to Dubai, if and when both carriers fly there? As well as competing with BA, Emirates, or South African?

Pure speculation, but could the "big thing about to happen" be a joint codeshare LHR-Dubai service between VS and BD?

Previous rumour included LHR-YYZ (presumably less demand now that transatlantic traffic is down) and other routes...

Bmi already have the rights to fly those routes out of LHR along with a whole load of others, have done for years now (even when I still worked there).

If this is true, I never understood why it's taken them so long to start up, there are a whole load of destinations they could fly to and no doubt make more money on than the MAN-US routes. I guess SMB has finally accepted the fact that they ain't going to get open skies to the US for a long time. I'll check it out with my BMi Buddies tomorrow.

They are also going back into handling again at LHR. They got LOT and are due to get CY back too. They finally realised that the handling side of the company was where most of the profits came from to keep the airline going, and after failing to buy back what they sold to the Go-Ahead group are starting up themselves again. (They are currently recruiting Customer Service Agents at LHR if anyone is interested).

If their A332s could reach Kuala Lumpur - they should certainly look into that sector since MAS flights have been operating with excellent load factors. Flew last week (see trip reports) to KUL and all 3 747s last Saturday were full. Am returning to LHR on Sunday and my flight is also full... and March is supposed to be a 'shoulder' season!

But aren't the yields to KUL quite low ?

Most people flying on KUL are going onwards to Australiasia destinations. Unless BMI has a connecting partner, I doubt flights will be that full for KUL flights.

bmi would use the "3rd" airbus that spent most its time at MAN doing nothing, then the other one would be the one they have had new this year, or are to have this year? There will be the MAN-IAD and MAN-ORD as usual, then the possible "new" routes from October?!

It's about time!

I was wondering how long it'd take BD to realize that there are far better things to do with nice new A330s than essentially let them rot while maintaining a "woe is me, I cant fly Heathrow-USA" temper tantrum!

Anyways, there are probably far more prosperous locations that are within their reach from LHR than this country is currently.

bmi could code share with MAS on their extensive down under operations, just like KLM. NG/OS is also an option though with their limited daily flight to SYD or MEL on different days...

But I doubt their A332 can reach KUL non-stop fully loaded all year round unless cargo space is exchanged for range... But I still doubt it... Especially these days when the route is rather deviated with the ongoing activities in MidEast.

But I hope this could come true and then we will be able to see the beautiful bmi A332s in KUL  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
