Paris CDG Security Question

When i was in CDG, terminal 3, satelite 5 i belive, the security checkpoint was no more then 20 yards to the gates, and less then a hundred yards to the planes itself. IS this a regular thing in paris? are they all like this. i mean couldnt someone with some explosives in there back or something blown up the planes from that close? i mean is that really safe? because ill be honest didnt feel safe when i was in CDG that the security checkpoints were that close? is it like that in all the satelites?

you were probably at CDG terminal 1
there are no satellites in terminal 3 or 2 for that matter

yes all the check-points are that close
it's due to the fact the airport was designed when bombing and highjacking wasn't so popular...after what you know, evertything had too be done in a hurry

if you feel so unsecure about it, how about many airlines which use a van transportable X-ray to scan some interline bags just under the plane??

these kind of "under" the plane x-ray are used for ,say, bags coming from the middle-east and interline on some US airlines...

feel more comfortable now?

Yes, sorry about that, i was at terminal one. I got a little confused.

Why do they have these vans? Are you really serious about this? because that is really scary if you think about, becuase its right under the plane. Are they doing anything to move these security checkpoints back or anything like that?

What difference it makes??? As long as the potential hijacker is detected before the plane takes off, there is no difference.

If someone wants to blow himself up, then why should he go to the airport? Go to the subway during the rush-hour and the damage is much larger!

well what difference does it make if the person sets off the bomb on the ground or in the air, theres still the same amount of people. acually there is probably more people, because off all the planes along with it. when someone sets off a powerful enough bomb that it can get that close to like 5 airliners, it can do a lot of damage.

Also, is it like this at other airports in europe? do you feel safe when the checkpoints are this close?

In airports like SIN and AMS, there is no one fixed security checkpoint after immigration. Each boarding gate has its own security, which makes it really really really close to the aircraft.

At SIN all passenger baggage is put through an X-ray machine prior to entering the check in area and is subsequently labelled to show it has been screened, although the terminal is full of transit pax whose bags have no such labels so it would appear to be fairly easy to get an unchecked bag into the terminals.

I feel a lot safer in Europe than in the US...
People are WAY too paranoid nowadays. Get a life for god's sake!! Where are we going too in aviation, no more metal knives but plastic ones which are actually far sharper than the steel ones, locked cockpits so that vital interaction with cabin crew is now completely lost, even our children are now refused a jumpseat, lunatic U.S. screeners who don't allow me to take my maglite into the cockpit while I have a VERY sharp and deadly axe behind my seat...

you are paranoid, I like our european airports and I never feel unsafe but I will immediately stop flying if all this security bullshit will get along this way (meanwhile I feel unsafe when I see a security guy because I don't know what he will do with me or in which way he will threaten me this time and be my friend I prefer a short life in liberty and freedom than a long life in a way like living in a Dictatorship, yeah and I like my cigarettes, my beer in the evening ....). As mentioned before if you want to make terror it's not necessary to go to an airport, you can kill much more people if you go to the underground as mentioned before or to the market place at sunday time or to the next university, theatre ..... much more places I could mention here where you might have luck .......

There are plenty of airports where checkpoints are close to the gates. Dallas/Ft. Worth, some Minneapolis gates, etc. etc. It's not that unusual.

I flew out of that same satellite in January and I remember commenting to myself on how lax the security was. Firstly the security personnel at the x-ray machine were more interested in their conversation than checking their monitors. Secondly the doorway to the inner walkway that led to the jetway was not secured as it is in most airports. It was left partway open with a "chain" hanging from the latch. Imagine my surprise when a passenger just walked through the door to ask one of the gate personnel a question.

For 5 years I've been one of the security supervisor in this terminal ,and what I read here is too insulting

1st : the situation in this terminal is not at the top, and it's not at the top in most terminals throughout the world (cf latest case of journalist going thru SFO security with lead-lined suitcase)

wherever you go you'll find screeners chit-chatting and you have the feeling they're wanking around instead of working

2nd : as mentionned before this CDG1 is not the only terminal in the world using close-to-plane x-ray and frankly it remains to be proved it's more dangerous

we could do as in Turkey : only pax having a ticket enter the terminal and bags are screened and customs searched when entering the terminal...I'd go for it, and I wish I was there when "I-know-everything-I'm-an-expert" pax would create a scene too because old'ma needs smb to carry the 50kg suitcase

3rd : Jkent95 I perfectly know what you're talking about and you're right, these f*cking crap doors installed after 9/11 are trash

Nevertheless, contrarily to what people think, it is not the mess it looks like, considering that when you reach that point, you're supposed to be a "clean" pax who went thru security... plus when you pass these doors there are others electronically locked before you reach the planes

I sincerely hope this thread wasn't aiming at discrediting some EU airports in particular because that would be gross

Obviously, if the supervisor doesn't have a problem with it, then it has become an accepted practice! Hold your people accountable for doing their jobs, please.

No I don't have a problem with it

when you're on duty at a security check for 8 hours,with a rota of 20 minutes behind the screen and 20 minutes at metal detector, it's normal and human you chit-chat
it doesn't prevent you from doing your job that's what it has become an accepted practice, including in the US

and as far as your rude remark is concerned, what don't you spend some time at managing teams in an international airport and come back and tell us your experience?
