Your ERJ-145 Experiences? (Preferably CO EX)

Sat Mar 29, 2003 1:42 pm

Hi all.

Just been confirmed on 2 ERJ-145 flight for a little bit later this year (June/July) and was curious to know your experiences.

I am flying with Continental Express.... One leg is from IAH-CHS and the other from CHS to EWR. (My other two are 735s...)

What are COEX's jungle jets like in terms of comfort and service? I know there is no IFE...
For the 2.5 hour flight to CHS from IAH, can I expect anything more then a bag of pretzels?

Thanks!!

Like any other ERJ. Small.
If you 6 feet tall ( or taller) than it will not be too pleasant. I would say pretzels or peanuts is all you can count for. Hoppefuly the flight wont be full.

I flew a ERJ-145 from CLE-MSP a while back ('99 or '00) and they are capable of full meal service.

Try to get a seat on the 1 seat side. The legroom is pretty ridiculous and the aisle is about 2" lower then the platform your seat is on. I tried to sleep but my feet kept falling into the aisle and I couldnt get comfortable. The windows are really low so dont try to look out the window too long or your neck will start to hurt.

All in all, I personally would try to avoid them if possible.

Thanks guys..

Adam- That sounds suspiciously similar to a CRJ...sure you arent confusing the two?

I do have a seat on the one seat side, though. Row 10 on one and 7 on the other (Both "A").

Thanks! If anybody from Continental could comment on possible meal/snack service, that would be appreciated!

Adam84:

I echo your comments. I hit my head when I entered the aircraft (US Ex), and I'm only 5'11". The windows are difficult to see out of (more so than a Dash 9/Mad Dog or 73X). I was on a short (25 minute) flight, so I don't know about long-term experience.

Hope it helps.

Hmm..... this could be a "fun" flight. But Im only 5' 4" (14 yrs old... so its fairly proportional).

Hopefully it wont be too much of a problem...

I havent flown a CRJ yet and really try to avoid most regional service since that flight.

Being 5'4" you shouldnt really have much problem at all. I am 5'9" and it was torture.

I flew in a CO ERJ-145 twice a couple years ago, on MKE-HOU and HOU-MKE. I hated it - the most uncomfortable seat I've ever sat in, including Aeroflot aircraft. My ass was asleep and I was in pain by the time we landed in Houston. I go out of my way to avoid the ERJs now. It is absurd to have an aircraft that small and that uncomfortable flying a route that is more than an hour and a half.

Plane SUCKS for a route more that 90 Mins I go far far out of my way to avoid them. It will soon catch up to the Airlines that people don't like to fly on a RJ for more than 90 MINS just my 2 cents but they are a great planes for short little hops

I've flown the ERJs quite a few times, mostly on the DAL-IAH route, but have also flown ATL-CLE and CLE-MSP, and a few other routes that I am forgetting in my drunken stupor. I really like the ERJ-145. I think that they are about 20 times more comfortable than the CRJ, especially on CO Express compared to an ASA CRJ. The seats are all leather, and really comfortable. They may be thin but they provide very good support. BTW, I am 5'10-5'11 180lbs. I love 'em. They are great for short hops, but arent too bad on long flights either.

Tip--Get seat 1A, it has a lot of legroom.

Actually, never mind, sorry...Youre 14, and 1A is classified as an exit row, despite the fact that it is behind a bulkhead.

Sorry to go off topic, but how do you calculate meters into 6"1 or so?

I'm 1m93, would like to know how much this is (6"3 is my guess?).

I flew on one from Saint Louis to Houston, once. Heh, that was fun...

Got a 737-500 on the way back. Quite a difference. (Though there was a little kid in the window seat that I requested. Grr. Being the nice guy I am, I let him have it since he was very excited about the flight. I think it was his first time on an airplane.)

I see most people respond to these questions if thay have had bad experiences with this aircraft. I myself like these little jets and choose them over larger types on a regular basis. I've flown several carriers ERJ's and all have had leather seats. As a regional the seats are light build so they don't have deep padding like you'd get on a larger plane and the seats are barely an inch narrower. Once seated in an A seat you'll have a huge amount of headroom as there are no overhead bins on the A seat side, this is a bother if you have 1A or 2A because you have to go back to row 3 to stow anything in an overhead. The cabin is light and airy as the windows are relativly large, there have been comments that it's uncomfortably warm in the first three rows but I've never noticed myself. Personally the rows 4 through 9 on either side are my preferred seats so I'm easily pleased. I've flown 2.5 hour sectors in these aircraft several times and I don't suffer the discomfort as others have stated here, I don't know why, I just don't. The aircraft is capable of full meal service and I've only ever had a lunch box once. There isn't a lot between the airlines service and to a large extent the biggest difference is the crew uniform, and the paint job on the outside.
I like these little jets because I can get in and out much faster, Think of 300 people deplaning out of two doors or 50 out of one door?
Airlines use these little jets because they'd go broke faster flying 50 people on a 30 minute flight in a 767.
I remember when the DC-3 was new!

I took an ERJ from CLE-MSP about a week ago and I was very impressed by the service. As far as I can tell, all the service in EWR is done with jetways, but in CLE I walked out on the ramp and onto the aircraft on a beautiful day in Cleveland. The takeoff was graceful, non-turbulant and notably quiet. Those Allison turbines are way at the back, and I was way at the front (seat 3C) so I may not have been able to hear them, but the whole ride seemed very quiet. It was a 5:30p flight, and to my surprise the flight attendant handed out your choice of ham or turkey sandwiches with the drink service. By no means is this a multi-course meal, but it is an extra feature that you often don't see on commuter-size equipment. In this day and age of airlines cutting everything, it is nice to see that CO has kept little things like that which help out after a long day of running around the city of Cleveland. Where I work, we don't have meal services on anything smaller than the ARJ, just beverages. Anyways, inside it is a bit small, reminiscent of a Saab 340 in layout. It felt a bit bigger, depending on the row however. Seat 3B and 3C I felt were winners in legroom, along with 1A. On a short sector, you will be alright. Longer sectors I could see getting a bit cramped, but I was only on there for 1h20m, so my experience is not all-encompasing. Overall I had a good experience and look forward to riding the ERJ somewhere again.

I was on a United Express CRJ between IAD-BTV a few times, and I can't say the legroom is excellent, but I can't say it's horrible. But then Again, I'm only 12.

I've been on 2 COExpress ERJ-145 flights...EWR-PVD (only like 40 minutes) and CLE-PVD (1h35m).

Both flights I found to be very comfortable, the seats were great, big, cushy leather, decent legroom...and, unlike Comair CRJ's...they recline! I'm 6'0 235 and I had no problem with this aircraft at all. You should have a great flight!

Seat 1A is not classified as an exit row on the ERJ's, Even though the galley service door/exit is right next to you. Just thought id pass that along to ya incase you like sitting there if your under the age limit.

You'll like the ERJ 145 CO EX if you like to fly! Sit on the single seat (port) side. Seat and leg room comfort was the same as the larger Boeing fleet. For extra leg room sit at the emergency exit row over the wing. I use them from DAL to IAH, return. They are fine for long haul, a little more personalized service as the F/A's seem to love their jobs at CO EX. I wish they flew them everywhere, easy on, fast off, no long waiting for aircraft disembarkation.

Great airplane up and out quick, you feel more of the flight characteristics of the aircraft too. Fun plane to fly.

Enjoy, Bf

I've been on two with US Express, both trips were great. Leather seats, clean, quiet cabin. The cabin's cramped, though, so if you're any taller than I'd say 5' 7-8" (I'm 5' 4"), it wouldn't be as nice. I like the ERJ over the CRJs- the windows are actually at a level you can see out.

I've never been on CO, but I'd guess it'd be a peanut & pretzel flight for you, JBLU.

I flew an ERJ-145 from IAH-MEM last year, and it really wasn't bad. I'm 5'5 with short legs, so I had no problem with the legroom - but I never have problems with legroom. I do have two complaints about them though:

1. The overhead bins are small, and if you have a carryon that's one of those small rolling suitcases, they may make you gate check it. So I'd bring a tote bag or something small if you want to be able to keep your magazines or headphones or whatever near you.
2. If you hit turbulence with any severity, you will really feel it. I know that's not so much a problem specific to ERJs as it is to all RJs, but it's still annoying, and for some, slightly scary.

All in all though, it's a great plane, comfy, quiet, etc. Have fun!

I *LOVE* the CoEx ERJ-145s. I fly them a lot EWR-OKC and back...I'd much rather that airplane than a full 737 to Houston with a short flight on an ERJ up to OKC.

Usually EWR-OKC is 1/2 full so I get two seats to myself, I love that airplane. It's actually the new XR or XL or whatever they call it.

I'd rather it than a 737 on ANY route.

One time EWR-OKC the flight was pretty full and I did have someone in seat B, and I was able to sleep and did fine. About 5'9".

I landed 45 minutes ago in DUS, I arrived from ZRH on the ER4 and it was great like all my ERJ flights. LX is also a very good airline, I enjoyed my flight on seat 3A very much!

I've been platinum Elite OnePass recently with about 1/3 of my qualifying flights on ERJ equipment. All of these flights were to DAL, CRP, and MEM from IAH.

I think they're terrific aircraft. They ride well, are pretty quiet, and have adequate storage space for people who aren't trying to move Noah's Ark in their carry-ons. The bathrooms are better than those in most MD-80s, and on longer segments, there is a cold snack.

I don't understand why people speak so poorly of these aircraft. I'd rather have CO be a thriving company with hundreds of cities served and multiple frequencies daily using the "jungle jets" than having to match my travel schedule to a time of day when the carrier can fill a 737.

COEx keeps these aircraft clean, inside and out. The seat padding is not that much different from a coach class seat on any airline I've flown. I always ride in the "A" side, and I'm a big person - 6' and heavy.

I like the comment that "if you like to fly, you'll like this equipment." I would agree with that. The only equipment I haven't particularly enjoyed was the Beech 1900.

Just so you know, when I fly to Dallas, I always pick the "jungle jet" flights over Southwest .. the comment about having to board with 50 people instead of 110+ is valid, the flight is just as comfortable, and the frequencies are great.

I hope you enjoy your trip on the ERJ..
Respectfully - the Divo

I'm flying MSP-EWR in a few weeks. Lady on phone said snack/lunch which is sandwich, cookies, etc. It's only a 2 hour flight on a 737! I always call about it, and they are right. I flew MSP-EWR-MSP a lot of times since 9/11, and yes, I've gotten sandwiches in economy every time!

I for one love it! Only flown in with BA, between Manchester and Belfast, but found it to be very comfortable and fun. More than in any other plane Ive flown in, its feels so fast, and I like the windows too - didn't find them low down and they seemed a lot bigger than on the 737 et al. Its a fun plane to be on.

I flew on a CO Express ERJ145 from EWR to BUF three days ago. I think it's a neat little jet. I saw a few people bump their heads but in all honesty I've flown on widebodies that were more uncomfortable. The leather seats were very nice and the seat pitch was adequate. Service was excellent, and what was a first for me the flight attendant (John I think it was) came through the cabin before landing and personally shook the hand of every passenger thanking them for their business. The most memorable thing for me though was that they kept the beer in ice water at the bottom of the service cart. After having to drink many a warm brew in flight it was a welcome change.

This ERJ145 seating plan image was taken from Seatguru.com and on that website, they give recommendations where to and where not to sit (if you mouse over the green and red (bad) seats).

My experience (ISP-CLE on COEx) was good. I slept most of the time, but I was also extremely exhausted. It wasn't terribly bad other than that I thought the ERJ ceilings were a bit low.

Hey,
I thought they were pretty good, I was lucky enough to be sitting in the exit row single (row 12) on both of my flights and it was really comfitable. I'm 6'2 and leg room wasn't a problem there. I did have to duck in order to walk on the plane but the flights were short (CHS-EWR-BTV) so I didn't need to get up during the flight. Food was a box that had a sandwich and other stuff on the CHS-EWR flight. Pretzels from Newark to Burlington. Windows were good and I didn't have any problems seeing out of them, then again I was almost laying down in the exit row  Smile

I'm 6'0'' and I find the legroom on ERJs just fine. I've flown them many times and find them very comfy. Also, the windows are very high (contrary to what Adam84 says) and big so you get a great view. I love flying the ERJ, but for long flights I'm not so sure. Longest ERJ route I've been on was CLE-PWM on a -135.
