JetBlue Adds 15th Daily FLL-JFK

Mon Mar 31, 2003 5:14 am

Not huge news, but I just think it is amazing that jetBlue is practically running a shuttle service between Ft. Lauderdale and JFK. They justed added a 15th frequency this Friday.

Leaving FLL-JFK @:
0610, 0745, 1040, 1055, 1150, 1230, 1300, 1355, 1635, 1735, 1755, 1900, 2000, 2100, 2230

Leaving JFK-FLL @:
0705, 0720, 0810, 0850, 0925, 1045, 1300, 1400, 1415, 1525, 1625, 1725, 1900, 2110, 2220

The new flights, BTW, are B6 349/350, leaving JFK @ 1625/Leaving FLL @ 2000.

In addition, jetBlue offers twice-daily FLL-IAD-LGB and daily FLL-LGB starting 8 May 2003.

That's a remarkable amount of daily lift in one market!

It will be interesting to see what happens when Song & JetBlue go head-to-head.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

I"m surprised, what does their loadfactor say about that?
But compare that to 5 767s and you've got an equivalent.

162. That would be about 2430 seats/day. That's about 10 763s, or 6 744s(in mixed config.)

Anyone know what the game plan is for JB? Will they try to fill in the middle of the country or continue the North/South and transcon stuff. They have the options to triple the size of their fleet...

I guess with UA downsizing and AA soon to follow, there will be holes to fill. Has anyone seen their big picture?TC

If JetBlue keeps expanding at FLL they'll need more gates. Right now they have sole occupance of 1 gate and share another with America West.

I believe this is a temporary flight.

jetBlue uses gates C4 and C6 at FLL, and at peak times of the year, usually add flights onto the route. These flights almost always begin with the digit 3, and also have 3 digits, unlike the rest of the normal FLL flights.

A few years ago, I was on flight 384, and that flight was inoperative for about 10 months two weeks after my flight. It has made another come back, I see.

I wouldnt count on #15 being permanent. It is just another flight to handle capacity.

BTW- jetBlue seats 162.

I believe that many flights between JFK and FLL should be a sign that B6 should seriously consider getting the A321-200.  Smile

No way. 18 or 24 extra seats on a limited selection of routes would not be worth the expense, complexity and bother of another type in the fleet. Better to stick with a single type that does anything and goes anywhere the airline flies. The A321 is severely limited on transcons, has a number of different parts, and would create overbooking problems in the case of a substitution with an A320. Who needs it.

Jeff G,

I have some comments in regards to why I think B6 should get the A321-200:

1. The plane has enough commonality with the A320 that there is no need to expensively retrain flight, cabin and ground service crews.

2. The range issue has been pretty much solved with the new higher-MTOW versions that US put on their transcon flights between the US West Coast and PHL, PIT and CLT.

3. Given the very busy JFK-FLL and JFK-LGB routes, the A321 will be perfect to provide extra capacity without having to use up additional takeoff/landing slots at various airports.

I'm not asking B6 to buy a large fleet of A321's; at most, B6 could use about 11-14 A321's on their busier long-distance routes.

Ray,

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I still don't think it's a good idea.

1. The plane has enough commonality with the A320 that there is no need to expensively retrain flight, cabin and ground service crews.

I admit training is not a significant factor for the operating crew. Maintenance would be another factor. There are significant physical differences between the two types, though they're not much apparent to the pilots.

2. The range issue has been pretty much solved with the new higher-MTOW versions that US put on their transcon flights between the US West Coast and PHL, PIT and CLT.

Range isn't the problem, performance is. The airplane can physically make it, but if it's at all full, it is restricted to much lower altitudes. This has ramifications for fuel burn and passenger comfort. And the A321 has the same wing as the A320, but is forced to carry 35000 more lbs, which affects climb performance. A fully loaded A321 could not depart from LGB, SAN, and possibly other west coast stations with enough fuel to make the east coast. What's the point of most seats if you have to block them off?

3. Given the very busy JFK-FLL and JFK-LGB routes, the A321 will be perfect to provide extra capacity without having to use up additional takeoff/landing slots at various airports.

The extra seats might be useful going to FLL or other Florida stations (none of which are slot restricted), but the only way to make it work reliably would be to make a station all A321 all the time, complete with spares. JetBlue does not want to be faced with bumping 24 pax or so from a full flight because a widget broke and the only spare aircraft is an A320. How will you accommodate them, on the next (full) filght?

It's not just a simple matter of "oh, the pilots can fly either one, so they're interchangeable". They are two different aircraft, with different strengths. I'm not ruling out the A321 from ever appearing in JetBlue colors, but it's not a no-brainer decision just because airplanes are filling up.

This is best idea B6 really need orders on the new Airbus A321-200 aircraft and kept it up for more customers on the every of the flight. This is useful for the aircraft made with daily nonstop to JFK flight. Please let's do it for jetBlue on the orders Airbus A321-200. Thanks!

Jeff G,

Great points, I had no idea regarding the 321 vs 320. Interesting points, so if the 321 had a different wing and etc it would be able to have a better climb and performance? If it did have a different wing and etc, then it would lose most of it's commonality with the 320 and become a different plane all together?

Yes, it does seem like jetBlue's FLL-JFK route does scale back quite a bit once summer rolls around; down to 11 daily round-trips at the beginning of June. Still a lot of seats each way, but a 27% cut from peak capacity.

I do agree with Jeff G about the unsuitability of the A321 to jetBlue's business. One of the most important things for keeping costs down, by far, is keeping their operations as simple as possible. Only one fleet type, with only one capacity, keeps scheduling and maintenance simple. What does happen when a full A321 has a mechanical and the only available spare is an A320? To compare, Southwest has only ordered and taken delivery of a single model of the NG737, the -700. And, moreover, they've configured them with the same number of seats as the 737-300's to keep scheduling simpler (consider that they could have squeezed in another row on the -700 and still had seat pitch comparable to the other majors). And offering more flights is just more convenience for your passengers; it's really only a problem when you're very short on slots (they're not) or need to offer more than, say, 30 daily round-trips. WN offers 22 daily round-trips between LAX and OAK and 29 between DAL and HOU, as an example.

Is concourse B open yet?
jetBlue could get 3 gates there and lose the others. looks like FLL is going to be a minihub

Flairport,

Yes, it is for the new concourse B is already opening from January 7, 2003. No, jetBlue not doesn't go inside with the gate at concourse B either and only for useful at the concourse C with Continental Airlines. I do know America West has planned to moved into the new concourse B and jetBlue really need more space at the gate for used LGB flight. They really need additional more new third gates. Well, hope this is your help for the FLL airport. Thanks!

Regards!
