If the AP is correct, the aircraft landed in Havana due to lack of fuel. DOH!

From Fox News:

HAVANA — A man claiming to be armed with two grenades tried to hijack a passenger plane from Cuba's small Isle of Youth to the United States late Monday, but was forced to land in Havana because of insufficient fuel.

Authorities said they were negotiating early Tuesday to end a standoff with the man, who remained on the plane along with 46 other people, on a remote tarmac at the Havana airport

The Turkish Airlines A310 landed at ATH and the hijacker eventually released all passengers and crew and surrendered to the local authorities. Nobody injured, plane back in Turkey.
Cheers

Hello

The plane was enroute from Nueva Gerona to Havanna. Plane is an AN-24 with 46 people aboard.
The hijacker wants to fly to Miami.

What's happening? We seem to be having another spate of hijackings from Cuba - those occur in spurts every so often. Back in 1983 there were 13 hijackings of US domestic flights to Cuba. There had been other spurts in the 1970s too. Perhaps this sort of thing will continue until relations between the 2 countries are normalised and the US removes its outdated embargo.
