BMI are hardly in a fit state financially at the moment to carry the start up costs of any new long haul routes. Admittedly, if by some miracle LHR
-USA suddenly opened up further carriers, it would be difficult for BMI
to stay out of that market, but with the current economic conditions I don't see the UK or US governments doing anything that will increase competition or potentially have an adverse impact on the existing LHR
-USA incumbants. With there already being internal debate about whether the MAN
service will indeed resume in June as previously suggested, I see nothing but codeshare on the near-term horizon as far as BMI
long haul is concerned.
