Nwa-launch Today

Fri Apr 04, 2003 12:55 am

Wasn´t today the day Northwest wanted to launch the new nwa-look and livery?
It´s late in the morning in the US East already, nothing has been broadcasted so far so is this launch a gala evening event?

I'm really starting to like the livery, but not on the 753. I really think it's just an awkward looking plane, and pretty much any livery on it looks strange.

Can't wait to see it on the 744 and 319 today!

don`t like the new livery, couldn`t they painted the engines black or red, at least something better than that.

The website hasn't changed at all and there isn't anything readily posted on the homepage about the color scheme change. Maybe this isn't the "official" date yet. Like any radical change, I'm sure it will grow on me over time.

Braniff, I think it would look worse on a plane like the DC-10 or 747. The length of the 757 combined with its relatively narrow height make for a nice clean long line, and the solid silver color looks very elegant...I'd call it the Silver Bullet. I think it would just look too plain on a 747, but that's just me.

I guess the livery will look better on bigger (fatter) aircraft. The new livery clearly shows what a bloody ugly bird the 757-300 is.

Although the press release hasn't been posted on the NWA site yet, pictures of the new livery ARE on the site... see my link above.

It will be interesting to see what the 744 looks like. I would like to see the 330 in that livery as well.

The 744 looks really good! I noticed that the KLM / NWA sticker on it also has the new logo.

Fitting that the first 744 painted is the first one delivered!

So the KLM/NWA sticker is still around? How come the 757 didn't get one?

Would of been nice to see it today at DTW, but it's my day-off. Don't want to go if I don't have too. I'm really curious to get the feel of what the right-side of the aircraft looks like.

Why is Northwest using the acronym associated with the rap group
"Niggas With Attitude"? Will they be the official carrier for the next NWA tour?

Unfortunately, it's a mirror image of the left side (well, not quite... obviously the letters aren't backwards). I'm surprised, because it means the "compass" graphic element points northeast on the right side... my theory is that this comes along with Northwest's shift to building the "NWA" brand... they're beginning to de-emphasize any geographical connotation that comes with their name and brand, and are looking to build a more globally-conducive identity. Thus, it is less important that the compass arrow point in any particular direction. If I were to speculate, I would think somewhere down the road, the "Northwest Airlines" text under the NWA on the livery might eventually disappear, or perhaps NWA will come to mean "North World Airlines" or "New World Airlines" (highly doubtful).

Very interesting... (as a marketing person, I love branding).

Maybe it's just the picture, the lighting or just my eyes, but with no horizontal line of any kind to draw your eye along the length of the plane, the fuselage seems shortened, almost like a 747SP w/ a stretched upper deck! (I know its just an optical illusion, just an interesting one).

It looks AWESOME on the 747-400, but...

too similar to JAL-- it seems like an Americized KAL scheme... it even has a the circular logo intersecting with the 3-letter logotype!!!

I like it! I saw the 757-300 when it was at BFI and when it did a fly over PAE before getting delivered.

I thought it wouldn't' look good on the 744 but it does!

I saw the 747 today in Detroit..looks very good in new paint job. There were alot of people taking pictures of it and alot of people just in awe of the new look. I really wish we would have had better weather in DTW today, but it was 42 and overcast..the plane still looked great.

I don't know--the new NW livery looks kind of strange on the 747-400; it just looks quite bland. It'll probably look way better on the A319/A320, though.  Smile

A red cheatline in the bottom and red engines would have made this a great livery

I was just driving by MSP before, and I saw the new 757-300! Didn't have my camera and it was obstructed by fences, poles, and an employee's parking lot, but I saw it! It looked verrrry nice in person!!

I must've been struck by lightning in the past week, or maybe I killed too many brain cells last weekend from all the binge drinking, but I'm actually starting to like the new livery.

The first pictures didn't do much for the livery, but now it looks alot better. I admit, the 753 is a goofy looking plane no matter what its painted in. The 744 looks sweet, and the winglest add a nice touch of red too. This livery is going to look awesome on the smaller narrowbodies like the A319's, and DC-9's. There's going to be less blank space on those aircraft.

Its a shame most of the pictures so far have been taken in cloudy weather or low light. Sooner or later we'll see some sunny pictures of it. I'm dissapointed, I was in DTW last Sunday, just days before the unvealing, now I won't see the new livery in person at least until sometime in May.

I assume these aircraft would be going into service immediately after the viewing today?

Although the old livery was better the new one looks smart although too colourless (all red instead of all silver would have been a real statement, remember Wunala Dreaming!).

The 744 looks ok, the A319 is pretty, on the 757-300 almost every livery looks ugly.

I like it, certainly it's an improvement over the existing scheme. If I could do 2 things to it, I'd:

1) bring the red on the tail down to the point where it joins the fuselage
2) I'd like to see a thin red stripe around the forward part of the engines (similar to Alaska Airlines)

Looks great on the 747 and the 319, it does look odd on the 753, but then again, as Na says, everything does. Will enjoy seeing it on the DC-9's.
