Boeing 727 Farewell

The day I've dreaded for a long time is almost here. After this weekend, there will be NO MORE 727 from USmajor airlines.  Crying How can I enjoy aviation without the constant roar of this elegant beauty?  Crying Sure, some cargo airlines will still operate them....but JEEEEZE, those will be few and far between. I guees I'll try to latch my love onto the MD-80-----sigh!  Crying

Around 1978-1980, Boeing was delivering 727-200 to

American
United
Eastern
TWA
Delta
Western
Piedmont
Northwest
Pan Am
Braniff
Continental
USAir
PSA

And had previously delivered to

National
Northeast

No 737 or A320 EVER or EVER WILL dominate the American skies the way the 727 did!

There were 727 everywhere!!!! especially at DCA, that place was virtually nothin' but 727 from mid '70s to early 80's

Indeed.........

I still to this day think the "three holer" has some of the best lines of any airliner flying.
I'm not a real aeronautical engineer, I just play one on Airliners.net.

I share your sentiments 727LOVER, the 727 is my favorite bird too. It's really a shame that the major airlines had to get rid of all of them, at least they should have kept a few, some of them aren't even that old. At least that charter airlines (Champion, Falcon, Planet, ect.) will still be flying them for a little while, as well as PanAm III.

My very first flight was on a 727-200.....

I will always love the aircraft....next to the L1011, the best one ever built in my opinion.

I'll miss you three holer!!!!!

The 727 was one sleek looking jet. Considering it's age the 727 still doesn't look old. The T-tail, 3 engine pod configuration just makes the 727 look slick. It always was and still is one of the fastest domestic jets around though.

I"m going to miss the 727s as well...I rode on many of them, Pan Am (original), Western, American, Northwest, Fedex, Delta.....even a Million Air Pax 727-100 down in South Africa. I have been lucky enough to ride jumpseat when I was at Fedex...once flew a Fedex one Cross country Sacramento-Casper, WY-Tulsa-Memphis-Portland, ME

it was always interesting to work them when I was in MEM with Delta...I believe one of the Delta aircraft I worked was the former Western one I flew when I was 10.

as for the lines of a 727, previous posters are exactly right. Timeless...

its been a great ride! Victorville, here I come

I've only flown the 727-200 twice--both times in 1970: TYO-OSA on JL, and TPE-HKG on CI. I remember the plane had fast climb performance and also was pretty quiet up front. Yes, they will be missed in passenger serivce.  Sad

However, that doesn't mean the 727's are going to completely disappear from US skies altogether. Don't forget the Dee Howard-modified 727-100RE's UPS still flies, planes I expect to stay in UPS service at least until 2010.  Smile

Boeing should really consider of making the 727NG by puting new engines, NG cockpit, winglets, and new wings designed....this aircraft has everything an airline want and really safe. whyyyyy  Sad

Boeing almost did build what amounted to a Next-Generation 727 when it proposed a redesigned 727-200 with two PW2037 engines instead of three JT8D engines. Problem was that no airline was interested. If Boeing had gone ahead with that project it's very likely that 727 production could have continued possibly even to this day, because with the PW2037 engines (and possibly growth to PW2040 engines) the plane would have burned less fuel on a seat-mile basis and also meet today's strict noise and exhaust emission rules. It also would have resulted in NO sales of the A320 to HP, NW and UA. Very likely, Boeing would have also built a variant powered by two Rolls-Royce RB.211-535 engines, which would have made the plane quite popular for European and Middle Eastern sales.

They should have done it and launched it, it could have been a low cost aircraft for its category, adding a fly-by-wire in the whole aircraft system..the perfect airliner.

Just a quick question, is the 737NG's are fly-by-wire?

I like reading these threads dedicated to the 727. They are quite rare in Australian skies these days, and are not in commercial service anymore. I have fond memories of flying on the 727 as well as seeing them at the airport(s) - beautiful aircraft.

I'm going to miss it too, but somehow I will feel better. I'm going to explain why: At least I won't be frustrated anymore about knowing whether I will be on a 727 or not when booking my flights, I'll be less obsessed about the aircraft type when choosing a flight. Now I KNOW there are no more 727's. During the mid 90's when the majors where still operating 727-200's in large numbers, I was very frustrated about not flying on 727's, I was missing them a lot. That was 1995 and 1996, two bad years for me. Those were the two years I didn't fly on 727's at all, and there were still a lot of them in the United States. Yes, two terrible years in air travel for me. I did nothing to fly on them during those two years. As of 1997 I took good resolutions, I did everything to catch rides in as many 727's as possible because I knew they would not be in operation much longer. One year ago, I flew on the final 727 flight with American. I knew it would be my last flight on a 727 for the rest of my life.
I've flown on 727-200's all my live (I'm 32) with several major US airlines past and present besides American, they include Delta (Shuttle only), United, Pan Am (original), Eastern and TWA. The only non US airline with which I've flown on 727's is Air France.

I share many of the sentiments that many others have expressed on this thread thus far. I think that the 727 is by far the best aircraft ever produced (again, just my opinion). She has been in reliable service since 1963. I have amassed about 16 727 flights in my life time, and my hopes are to add just one more (Maybe with Pan Am III, or Planet something like that). One more time on one of these gracious birds, and I can let go. Just a wonderful aircraft, and something that was way ahead of her time. Boeing knew what they were doing when they designed the 727. To this day, the 727 still holds 2nd place for amount of aircraft produced (in regards to jet-powered commercial airliners), only to be surpassed by the 737 series. I can remember traveling as a small kid and couldn't go anywhere (practically) within the US and not find a 727. Now, they are few in number. I cherish every 727 I see, as I know that one day the only place you will be able to see them is either parked and rotting away, or doing a performance at an airshow. I will miss 727's sorely, but I am greatful for the opportunity to get a small wealth of 727 flights under my belt. Nothing like lumbering down that runway and hearing that unique buzzing noise from those JT8D's at full power, slowly picking up speed. Those babies just pitch up nice and slow, kind of hang there for a second, and away you go. andoutside of the aircraft, awww yeah-ear drum busters. Love to hear the roar of a 727.

Pan Am 3rd still flies 727s.
