SIA Pilots Ask Airline To Suspend HKG Flights

Fri Apr 04, 2003 6:58 pm

http://sg.news.yahoo.com/030404/1/39sxf.html

The Singapore Airlines (SIA) pilots' union has asked the carrier to scrap flights to Hong Kong and the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou which are at the centre of global health scare due to the SARS virus, a spokesman said.

The Air Line Pilots Association (Alpa-S) are also proposing to management that there should be no overnight stays for crew members in Beijing and Shanghai.

"We urge SIA to do that (suspend flights to Hong Kong and Guangzhou) not just for the crew but for the nation as well," union spokesman Frank John said.

"It's better we don't go to Hong Kong and Guangzhou," he told the financial news service AFX-Asia.

SIA spokesmen were not immediately available for comment.

The World Health Organisation issued an unprecedented advisory on Wednesday, warning travelers to defer non-essential trips to Hong Kong or Guangdong -- of which Guangzhou is the capital -- because of the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

Hong Kong and Guangdong are the hardest hit by SARS, an unusual form of pneumonia that could be potentially fatal and has no known antidote yet.

SARS is believed to have originated in Guangdong in November, spread to Hong Kong in February and from there to nearly two dozen countries through airline travel, killing more than 80 people and infecting some 2,400 others.

SIA said on Wednesday it plans to cut flights to Hong Kong by 37 percent -- from 41 to 26 a week.

Weekly services to Guangzhou will be cut to five from seven. All services to Kaohsiung will be suspended from April 15.

==================

I think they're WAY overreacting. The disease that's plaguing Singapore, HK, China and Canada is not SARS. It is paranoia, fear and ignorance.

Singaporeans also don't seem to realise that they are the second worst affected area for SARS outside the greater China area. (No Singapore is NOT in China!) Yes, it has largely been contained here and it has not been spreading to the general community, bbut it still doesn't change that fact. How would they feel if other carriers suspended flights to SIN totally? So far, I haven't heard of any flight suspensions to SIN yet but I don't know if they'll come rolling in (excluding SIA, of course!!)

The survival rate for SARS is 96%. It is not as contagious as people say it is, and wearing masks doesn't help. So far, no one has caught it just by taking public transport, going to the cinema or shopping. Yet the slightest cough in Singapore or HK now attracts stares.

I urge everyone in Singapore and Hong Kong to view this rationally. As of now, 99.999% of Singaporeans and Hong Kongers are free from SARS. Of those who have SARS, more than 60% have recovered and have been discharged.

Please guys, don't let fear, ignorance and paranoia take a hold of your life!

"So far, I haven't heard of any flight suspensions to SIN."

Hong Kong's de facto flag carrier has cancelled and suspended some flights to and from Singapore and Hong Kong.
Malaysia Airlines has just today announced a daily service suspension.

I can understand the concern & proposal of the Singapore Airlines pilots’ union. Unlike in Singapore, as a matter of fact, Guangzhou & Hong Kong are the only two cities in the world in which the SARS outbreak has spread to the general community. In Singapore the outbreak is restricted to only hospitals & other medical institutions, right? The situation there isn’t nearly as bad.

If the unlikely scenario prevails where SQ scraps ALL flights to HKG, then can it get any worse for Hong Kong aviation? Other airlines will take note of this, and might do the same. Chek Lap Kok airport will soon start to resemble the ghost town-like KLIA (just kidding!).  Smile

It seems like the cities of Hong Kong & Singapore have come down with something worse than SARS: paranoia & fear.

"Hong Kong's defacto flag carrier." Can you not bear saying "CATHAY PACIFIC"?

CATHAY PACIFIC CATHAY PACIFIC CATHAY PACIFIC CATHAY PACIFIC CATHAY PACIFIC CATHAY PACIFIC.

Are your eyes burning now?

hahhahahaha.

Hey the situation in SIN isn't bad you know. The foreign media makes it look like everyone's dying but basically, not many people are bothered. I know it's worse in HK, but the media is also blowing things way out of proportion there.

So please do continue coming to SIN and transiting through our airport. It is perfectly safe.

Khoa you aren't committing a sin by typing 'Cathay Pacific', you know that, right? LOL.

SIN & BKK have no doubt already overtaken HKG in passenger numbers.

Well the SARS outbreak is hogging all the headlines here. No one gives a fuck about the war in HK anymore. You know how some locals are, health conscious & hypochondriacs (well it’s a little more understandable given the current situation in HK).  Smile

Captain Dilip Padbidri - a member of ALPAS hsa said that the Airline is doing all it can to protect its staff. "The reality is that the company has been very pro-active with its response to Sars to reduce the risk to the pilots."

"But as the situation became clearer, SIA stepped up its plans to protect all its staff." The union and Singapore Airlines Limited management have also discussed ways to protect pilots and cabin crew from staying overnight in SARS affected destinations. "We are also looking at measures such as putting up crew who have to stop in Hongkong at the airport hotel to minimise their exposure to crowded town areas."

Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive Officer - Dr. Cheong Choong Kong - announced over the Airline House PA system that the airline is facing a 'simultaneous onslaught' from SARS and the War in Iraq.

Capitain Padibidri also said that the Airline's actions are a sign that the airline is planning a lot for the external effects on the Airlines and that it is putting staff before profit.

Hard to blame them. SARS has proven extremely infectious and has a greater than negligible mortality rate.

Never thought I'd hear ALPA-S say that  Smile
