Your Experience With U.S. Airways And UAL

Wed Apr 02, 2003 4:52 pm

Hello!!!

Have you ever flown with these companies? Did you have a nice flight? Do you know if a photo camera is allowed for taking pictures during the flight?
Any comment will be very helpful

Thank You, and best regards.

Yes, I have.
I have flown four flights with US. DFW-PHL, PHL-FCO, FCO-PHL, PHL-DFW. The flights within the US were decent. Food was bad, service was mediocre. The flights over the Atlantic were teriffic. Foor was good for airline food, though a little shy of filling. Service was great- the flight attendants were very cheerful, concerned with my comfort (and I was in coach!). The entertainment is great, and the seats on their A330s are great too- built in adjustable lumbar.

United was a good experience, in general. Their A320s are very nice aircraft. The two 737s (a -300 and a -500) I flew on were fine. The old -200 was junk, but they are all gone.
The best coach airline food I have eaten was on United. Time are different, though, now.

I like both.

I'll be flying US Airways this weekend from SEA-CLT via PIT, aboard an A319 and a 737-300. I'll post a trip report if I get around to it, or if you want to know more, email me (contact info in profile).

My main carrier is US Airways, and I fly quite often with them, about 70% of all my flights have been on them...their service has improved greatly, however post 9-11 theyve been forced to cut back on many things, but the experience is much enjoyable...as for picture taking, I do it on nearly every flight and Ive never had a problem with it, so you should be ok...

Pre-9/11 and post 9/11 i've found both airlines significantly changed. While on-time service has improved, schedule options have decreased, and meals and other amentities are almost non-existant. On my East Coast-ORD flights, i now prefer UA, because they use newer Airbus aircraft, have E+, serve Starbucks, and REFILL my coffee....

I havn't flown UA, but I will if they're still around on June 20th. We're supposed to go to HNL on UA.

US I've flown LAX-PHL-LGW-CLT-LAX and I found their service to be pretty good. We flew coach domestic and Envoy across the Atlantic. Coach was above average, and Envoy was great. Their IFE on the A330s is awesome, all except for the lack of a moving map.

I've flown UA, on SIN-NRT-SFO-BOS-SFO-NRT-SIN.

Their service was quite good, a standard airline service, nothing more or less. But the NRT-SFO and back segments were better than the rest, I'm not sure why, but I heard from my friend that UA's NRT service is their number one priority. Btw, I had meals on all segments.

Never flown on US airways before, so I can't comment.

I fly US Airways about 85% of the time, with the other 15% being flown on United. I find the service and the people to be some of the best in the business on both airlines. Ever since trying United, I've been motivated to fly them more often. I'm particularly fond of their channel 9, and their fares can be pretty low at certain points.

USAirways MetroJet was excellent. As was my only USEX flight/Allegheny Air.
United I flew BTV-IAD-MCO, I've flown their RJs between BTV-IAD, very nice service, down to MCO on 757 was great (pre 9/11) coming back, I hated the A319 with an old flight attendant who called me sweetie. The F/A was OK. but the A319 I absolutely disliked, I pitied the people going on to SEA.

US and UA are my core airlines. I have gone all over with them. US attitude has improved greatly over the last year. Each flight I have had with them has been enjoyable, comfortable (I love the 320, 321 and 330), and the food, well I only fly first so the food was always quite nice.

However, I did fly coach recently on UA, short trip. I did not get the impression that they were trying to change and please......

Just my opinion.

I fly UA quite a bit--I've flown in economy, business and first and I have to say I have always enjoyed my flights on UA. The flight attendents are usually friendly, and attentive. My personal favorite on United is the channel 9 which allows you to listen to your flight crew talk with ATC throughout your flight.
I've only flown US once from SXM-PHL It was nothing special, but not bad!
I would recommend both airlines based on my past experiences!

I flew US Airways back in Aug of 99, from PHL to LAX and LAX to PIT. PIT to YYZ. I found that their aircraft were very clean and well kept. I was on a Boeing 757-200 (ex Eastern to LAX) and a new build on the LAX-PIT. Both aircraft looked the same on the inside and were very clean. Leg room was not as nice as the Flight I had on Air Canada, but the food was pretty nice. Pasta was very enjoyable and the chicken dish was great too. On the PIT-YYZ flight, I was on a 737-400, and it was still a very clean aircraft, we didn't have a meal service, because we were going to be in Toronto in a matter of minutes. We had what one of the F/A's called the Mario Andrettie of the sky as our pilot. We got to YYZ early and left PIT late. Overall I would fly US airways again, they were to me kinda like the Old Eastern Airlines of today!! A great Airline who seem to know what they are doing!!

Flew US in 2000 EWR-BWI-EWR and 2001-2003* **ORD-PIT-JST-PIT-ORD**

* Going to fly to JST in July 2003. ** Codeshare w/ US on the ORD-PIT-ORD sector

Flew UA in 2001 EWR-ORD 2002 - ORD-MHT-ORD and 2003 ORD-PIT-ORD

On US I had some problems but they are improving.

On UA, I had Channel 9 and they were a great company to fly w/. I ended up arriving in ORD from MHT 30 minutes early.

Recently rode both carriers....

US from DFW to CLT to MDT to PIT to DFW (ELP-DFW-ELP legs done on AA)

UA from MCI to DEN to COS (WN from ELP to ABQ and then to MCI, rent car from COS to ABQ then WN from ABQ to ELP).

I can say unequivocally about both:

It was an airplane ride.

I got to my destination.

I found the cabin service on US to be light years ahead of that on UA.

One thing that irritates me, and probably always will:

"Due to the short duration of the flight, there will be no beverage service"

MDT to PIT is scheduled for 52 minutes, as I recall. About 180 miles.

52 minutes block time equates to a flight of somewhere between 35 and 40 minutes airborne, under normal circumstances.

If the cattle car airline with all the cheap, trashy, WalMart-hanging-out-in passengers can manage to get me a drink and a refill on a full 737 between HOU and AUS.....155 miles.....28 to 32 minutes airborne....then WHY O WHY can't other carriers get even one round of drinks out.

I was on a full-govt-Y fare from MCI to DEN (and thence to COS) and I "thought" I was getting put in E+ but if it was, it pales by comparison to AA's MRTC.

All in all, my gut reaction is that US waas "okay" and UA "needed work." Frankly, I would rate either behind AA, WN, or CO but ahead of HP.

Never been on UAL, but I think US Airways is excellent. Transatlantic flights are very good, domstic is OK. They have very good Flight crews, always very friendly and caring. (As far as ive seen)

I flew UA pre and post 9/11 and they were great I rode ORD-LAS-ORD on their DC-10's until they retired them. They were nice planes and nice flights I rode on. I also flew them from ORD-PIT on their 737's. The ORD-PIT was a nice one cause I got to sit in the cockpit after the flight and chat with the captain(a female one Big thumbs up) for a few minutes and get some photos but they never came out good. The flight attendants were nice and friendly and when I asked if I could take a photo of the cockpit they politely asked the captain without any strict No! or you can't. On my return trip I asked if I could change my seat and they said "find a empty seat and let me know". That was nice and quick and easy. So they have been the same before and after and I would still fly on them whether or not they were still having money trouble.

Why do you need a drink on a 30 minute flight? Do you expect one on a 30 minute bus ride? train ride? It's only 30 minutes, and the flight attendants are primarily there for your safety...

What he was saying is that Southwest will give you a drink and even a REFIL on a flight of that length. So there is no excuse for UsAirways not to - since they like to call themselves a "full-service" airline while they call Southwest a "no-frills" airline. The majors like to falsely call themselves "full-service" when in fact their domestic coach service is noticibly inferior to Southwest's in many important aspects. This is particularily true if one is not an "elite" frequent flier.

So the problem is not as much the lack of service as it is the false advertising and hypocrisy. If UsAir admitted that its service was on par with or inferior to Southwest's, there would be no problem.

I've never flown US, but I flew UAL this summer and around Christmas time, and I'm going to try not to repeat the experience...chronic rash of late flights, lost bags, unhelpful ground personnell. I must admit that the cabin service was not bad, and the food was pretty good. I put punctuality over inflight service, though, and that's not something I got from United. Depends where your priorities are.
