Why Such A "Colourful" Livery?

Does anyone know why JAT Yugoslav Airlines has operated at least 3 of its DC-9-32s in what qualifies as the most literal all-white livery ever seen? The only markings visible on the otherwise all-white fuselage and engine cowlings are the aircraft registration adjacent to a small Yugoslav flag and "DC9-32-HK" titling. I cannot recall having ever seen an aircraft in airline service without at least small lettering somewhere on the fuselage that identifies the operating carrier or the airline for whom the aircraft is being operated. Why the totally generic "plain wrapper" look sans any form of airline identity for some of JU's DC-9s?

That is often an "interim" step with acquired aircraft. The seller/lessor will agree to delivery it white (often because the last owner/lessee was obligated to paint it white on return). Repaint to the standard livery will generally occur when the next major shop visit is due.

The above post is exactly correct, and that is why JAT hasn't been repainting their DC-9s. They also did that with 737s, remember all the "ghosts"? But they painted all but two of those. Since JAT is not planning on leasing out their 737s anymore, theya have repainted most of them in full JAT livery. The reason the DC-9s are being kept white is because they will be retired very soon, and painting them would be a waste of money. Plus, there are only 2, and, comparativley speaking, they fly on very few routes, so its not such a big deal to leave the 9s unpainted.

It bothered me when we had so many all-white aircraft, particularly amongst the Boeing 737 fleet. Now JAT is down to the last two 737s that require a fresh coat of paint. The next in-line to receive new paint will be the YU-ANH, likely followed by the YU-ANW.

As for the DC-9s, those planes will be exiting the fleet later this year, so there is no point in wasting money on a new paint job now. BTW, the two DC-9s are in fact fairly busy. They fly primarily from Belgrade to Brussels, Milan, Rome, Athens, Istanbul and odd flights to Zurich, Frankfurt, Podgorica, Tivat, and Ljubljana.
