Airbus Confirms US Orders---now Getting A330-200's

Tue Apr 08, 2003 6:38 am

USAirways has changed some of their Airbus orders.

The new order for 10 A330-200 replaces an earlier order for 1 A330-300, 3 A319's, and 15 A320's.

Now the current outstanding orders include:
10 A330-200's
13 A321
6 A320

Delivery is set for 2007-2009

-----
Now it looks as if their mainline fleet plan is now set for the future. The 332's will likely replace the older 762's which will be due for retirement in that timeframe. The A321 will replace some of the older 757's in the fleet too. US is smart to reduce the A320 order. They already have a glut of 150 seat aircraft as they still have leases to maintain on the 733', 734's, and A319/A320.

Other fleet news:
6 A319/A320's were sent this week to MHV for storage, pending heavy maintenance
9 733'/734's being pulled out of the desert and returned to service
3 757's put in storage at MHV a/c# 615, 616, 618
1 762 put in storage is being leased to Transaero a/c # 647

Smart move. By streamlining and tweaking their Airbus order, they will more effectivley serve their market. Although, I guess the new order is a little more than a tweak.

True what you said about the 150pax-seat a/c.

Two questions:
Why is US leasing out that 762? With the recent addition of the ireland service, they seem to be at a serious lack of necessary widebodies. (Even though this was mostly due to CRAF and lower pax loads...) US was forced to cut ALL transatlantic service from PIT through June because of a shortage of widebodies.

Why is US sending A319/A320's to the desert because of heavy maintenance needs? I was under the impression that most of the planes out there right now also needed heavy maintenance (i.e. bringing the 733/734's back home ALSO required expensive maintenance checks...so why not just complete the checks on the newer and more efficient A319/A320's.) Is this because the lease rates are lower on the Boeings? Also, does anyone have a clue how many US Airbuses can be found in the desert now?

Good!
Nice aircraft. Should be a welcome addition.
Is it for domestic or international use?
