Tue Apr 08, 2003 9:27 am

Very scary.

Aircraft are now believed to be an average of 30 per cent full.

This sounds serious, but I am sure things will get back to normal once the SARS crisis is over.

And I am sure that SIA's load factor is down drastically too.

That didn't sound good for the airlines but it's good news for the passengers. At least you get more attention on board. =)

It's hardly good for passengers when their flights are cancelled.

You say this as if it's going to happen within the next week or so..... they barely even really know what SARS is, much less how to contain/control/prevent/eradicate it!

Load factor for the 6th was 39.4%, so not quite as bad as 30%.

You did not Rupert.

I do hope things get better soon or Hong Kong will see thousands more without jobs. Heard from a good contact that the peninsular Hotel (One of the world's best) now has a occupancy of 4%..................

CX will announce more flight reductions soon.

Load factors represent how full a certain flight is, and 30% is way unacceptable. Only thing that airlines can do is to cut flights to lower cost and to increase the load factors. However if things go worst still fater cutting flights cutting fixed costs like staff would be another move which we do not want thaqt to happen.

Best Regards

Pax should expect happy crew onboard with such a light load.
After all, people are just too panic to travel at this point in time. I believe the load will go back up as the fears of SARS go away in one to two months. Keep in mind that pax will not stop travel forever. They will come back.

I echo your comments. With substantial process in the war in Iraq and starting to get SARS under control, loads should pick up in about 3 weeks or so, I predict.

This would’ve been unimaginable only 3 or 4 weeks ago. What a sad state of affairs for Cathay Pacific, and Hong Kong.

Rupert you're probably right that things would be back to normal once the SARS crisis is over, but then the doubt now becomes: WHEN would that be over????

Reports are saying that SARS might have already become a disease that has "settled down" in Hong Kong, which means it won't be eradicated in any time soon. If you would have a look at the people in Hong Kong, as some of the HKG guys have mentioned, that 90% of the people have donned masks (including me).

Althought it's bad news, it makes perfect sense that nobody would want to come to Hong Kong any time soon. Tourism is hit VERY hard, and the poor loads on airlines and in hotels follow.

I've yet to wear a mask when I go outside, but I've tried one on at home, and while it’s a little uncomfortable at first, you get used to it. If universities finally open next week (schools are scheduled to reopen on April 22) then I don’t think I have a choice but to wear a mask (I study in HKU). I have a feeling they’ll yet again extend the closure for universities to April 22, because if you think about it, at the current infection rate of 40-50 new cases per day on average with no foreseeable hope of improvement, it would be inadvisable to reopen the universities as it wouldn’t be in the best interest of the students.

The seat factor indeed went down to 30.4% on Tuesday, April 7.

I just checked that the seat factor of CX889 JFK/YVR was 41 pax. Can't imagine how it's gonna look like later on if HKG govt still do not respond to SARS.

I think HK government is responding to SARS. However, it will take way longer to restore confidence of tourists and foreign investors.

I fear for Hong Kong's and CX's future. This could go on for a few years actually.

The first SARS patients who landed in hospital in Munich, Germany already have restored their full health and are back to their normal lives.
