CO In Asia?

Tue Apr 08, 2003 11:00 am

A co worker of mine at EWR, told me CO is considering a new route in asia. EWR-MNL( Manilla). Starting maybe in 2004 or 2005. My question is has anyone else heard anything about this.

Thanks

This is not entirely impossible. In the 80's, MNL, along with GUM, had DC-10 nonstops to HNL with CO Micronesia, so the relationship with CO goes a long way. They still maintain daily MNL-GUM flights today. New Jersey is just after Hawaii and California as states with sizeable Filipino population. PAL used to serve MNL-YVR-EWR 4 times a week with MD-11's (World Airways lease) during the mid-90's.

As this route would most certainly require a 777 to run it I would say in the timeframe that you mentioned that it is a slim to zero possibility. Basically given the limited number of 777s available and the number of current and future destinations that could better support it, Manila would seem to be a low priority. Perhaps a flight from HNL, or one-stop same plane service from HNL via GUM, but that would be about it.

Yeah I don't know about all that.... EWR-MNL is a substantial distance farther than EWR-HKG... and there's almost no way they could do it without a big restriction, if at all.

Is there that much traffic btwn HNL and MNL? You never know CO might want to code share with NWA first via NRT and see how many passengers they book on the code share flt number. Then maybe start their own flt

I've heard rumors of it being a tag onto the HKG flight.

Well, now that CO has suspended EWR-HKG, it might be a while if they were to start HKG-MNL.

They will start again when the SARS has gone....

We still get CO 738's in HKG from Guam... not seen one in years as they arrive about 10pm and leave about 11pm.

I would classify the resumption date of June 2 for EWR-HKG-EWR as tentative as there’s no way of knowing at this time whether by June the SARS situation in Hong Kong would’ve improved.

Yes, CO can operate passenger services to another country from HKG as they have the necessary fifth freedom rights as per the recent signing of an Air Services Agreement between Hong Kong & the USA.

But even if/when they resume flights here, I doubt they would commence services to another destination from Hong Kong with their own aircraft, they would probably let their partners do it or codeshare with CX.

An interesting option would be a code-share with Malaysia Airlines since NW and CO work closely together... although we are still waiting for any signs of a code-share between NW and MH since they sign anti-trust immunity years ago.

MAS and KLM already work extensively together and it should be a matter of time before NW and CO join in the fun.

Should CO and MH code-share - there would be a new RTW routing EWR-DXB-KUL-HKG-EWR - wouldn't that be fun!
