LHR Road Congestion Tax! Bad News For Spotters!

Thu Apr 10, 2003 12:17 am

GRRRRRRRRRR!

Stupid Ken Livingstone!

Quotes:

"London mayor Ken Livingstone has dropped his biggest hint yet that he is going to introduce a £5 charge for people to drive to Heathrow Airport."

"This is the death of kiss-and-fly because that will cost you £10 for the two journeys," he said. "Heathrow is increasingly a business airport so the people can afford it."

Angie Bray, London Assembly Conservatives congestion charge spokesman, said: "This is to do with raising money by taxing motorists who have no choice but to use their cars. The public transport links to Heathrow are inappropriate for many holiday makers with the Heathrow Express especially being very pricey. I also fail to see why Livingstone is so proud to say he will be ending what he calls "kiss and fly". That Livingstone wants to charge people to say goodbye to loved ones is fundamentally wrong."

What a prat that guy is. You can't get a lift to the airport, so you take a cab instead - same number of vehicles in the end. The Heathrow Express is very expensive and only runs from Paddington anyway, the tube is slow, and both tube and buses are very difficult if you have large bags.

And so what if Heathrow is used by business travellers. What does he think they'll do? Just accept the charge, or will businesses ultimately pass it on to the customers of their businesses, leading eventually to higher costs.

LHR could have been properly linked to the rest of the UK rail network in 1997 but BAA didn't want other operators affecting to profitability of the self contained Heathrow Express that it operates.

CDG/AMS etc all have proper public transport links to the rest of the country but LHR doesn't because neither the Government or the public can decide if it wants either a publicly or privately funded railway.

LHR is very well served by National Express and there is the 'Airbus' to central London so it's not as if it's impossible to reach the airport without a car.

Worse news for spotters is that Hounslow Council is looking into providing a car park in one half the field at the end of Myrtle Avenue and charging spotters a prince's ransom to park there.

Why not take the bike?

I remember that in the 1970ies during the oil crisis, the splendid Britsh cartoonist Giles had the following catchphrase under a cartoon on the Earl's Court Boat Show about an elderly lady obviously enquiring with the boat dealer about the purchase of a huge sailing yacht: "The lady wishes to know if they have taxed wind yet, Harry."

Spotters should become a protected species.

It is stated that airport employees will be exempt from the charge,as they are on low pay.Yes,some are, but not all.Do they plan to charge some but not others?,how will it work, take the details of the car registration and not charge those who are registered? What about 'us' airport workers in car hire,I have a company car but change it every day,how will that work?....

I understand what he is planning, but between him,the local councils and the Gvmt,we are being charged in everyway they can think of.

This plan is madness.

Just my 0.02 cents.

Crazy Ken has no jurisdiction over LHR, the Home Office do though. He seems to be obssessed with charging everyone and everything, and he's made a mess of London with the constant roadworks. Some parts of London look like a construction site.

What's wrong with a congestion charge on the road to LHR? I'm all for it. Heathrow is already one of the airports with the most public transport users, and moving that even further towards the tube is just fine.

To be perfectly honest, the london congestion charge zone is far too small anyway. It should be as big as Zone 1 in the tube network, but it is not.

Anyway. I doubt spotters would be scared away by a 5 pound charge for a trip. They're likely to spend much more on fuel, films, slides, sandwhiches,.... And they could use the tube or buses anyway.

It has been noted that the initial benefits of the Congestion Charging(CC) are starting to erode,in some areas journey times are now slower than before the CC.

Having CC at LHR is one step too far.

Take the Car Rental companies for example, between all of them the rent in excess of 2000 cars every day, thats 10K every day just for renters to leave the airport, let alone return!

This kind of charge in not fair on passengers, visitors or business people.

Mad Ken,lets hope he fails to get elected next time!

Just my 0.02 cents.

No,but it affects people who live in the surrounding area.He was elected mayor of London, not of its suburbs.
"Heathrow is increasingly a business airport so the people can afford it."
-Typical of the tax and spend mentality he has.

d-aqui said Why not take the bike?

Yeah, I'll take that into consideration next time I go to LHR with a large 20kg suitcase and a lap top in a carry on!

Lets get really here... Loony Ken hasn't even thought about spotters - I suspect that their vehicles form less than 1% of the traffic around LHR, and few venture into the central area. What he's trying to do is stop passengers and friends and families from driving into the airport, and for a large part when you've got luggage and stuff and come from areas away from London public transport is hugely inconvenient, difficult to use and in the case of some services like the Heathrow Express very expensive. This is just a fund raising exercise, because for the most part unlike the congestion charge it will have little effect.

The best way to do this,if it has to be done,is charge the people travelling into the central area,ie through the tunnel. The central area is a nightmare at certain times of the day.

Once again I state this is an unfair scheme/idea,however what stated above would be the most fair way to do this if it must be done.

It must be noted it is unlikely the BAA will receive any money from this, even though it is likely to have an impact on their profits through fewer visitors - not spending money on car parks, retail outlets,ie coffee in the terminals.

Mad Ken,who on earth voted for him?

Just my 0.02 cents.

If I'd had the right to vote back then, I'd have voted for him.... and I'd vote for him in the next election if I still lived in London, in case that's any comfort for you  Big grin

Why not just tax NCP. They provide parking at extortionist rates. I think most 'spotters' will have a problem paying the £5. If they leave the area and then drive through it again don't they get charged again? I wouldn't drive there if charging was in place. Are they going to charge users of the M25 and M4 for driving near LHR next? What about the A30 and other main roads around the airport?

Myrtle Avenue is public property isn't it? It would be a con to charge people to be in a public place. Also the locals might not want to lose the park.
