Cathay Cuts In Total 37% Of Capacity -

Fri Apr 11, 2003 4:22 pm

Cathay Pacific has announced that it is cutting 37% of capacity, the equivalent of 184 weekly flights.

"The cities to which services have been reduced are: Amsterdam, Bangkok, Denpasar, Frankfurt, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, London, Los Angeles, Manila, Melbourne, Nagoya, Osaka, Paris, Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, Taipei, Tokyo and Vancouver."

"Cathay Pacific is being badly affected by the fall in passenger demand and we must therefore take action to conserve cash and minimise spending. With lingering uncertainty in the Middle East and the profound impact that fear of atypical pneumonia has had globally, we do not know how long the current weakness in travel demand will continue. It is therefore not possible, at this stage, to quantify the potential impact on the company," said CEO David Turnbull.

A full list of cancellations is available at the Cathay Pacific Press Room

...and Singapore is cutting flights too. Big whoop.

It is sickening to see a member of the aviation community rejoicing in the misfortunes of any airline. I don't see the CX crowd gleefully posting about every one of SQ's problems.

Wow(!). I bet no one saw a post like yours coming up.

Rejoicing? I'd like you to find a quote of rejoice in the starter post.

I've seen enough of your past posts to be well aware why you posted this in a new thread when there was already another thread (gee - started by you!) with the exact same news.

Well it is true that S_air posts many of such news, but I believe in the other thread it was a separate press release.

Although it's going a bit too far to call Singapore_Air names, this constant posting of news by percentile is really counterproductive.

I mean, I just read a posting claiming 33% cancelled. Another one at 37%? A little bit of useless and overdone information. There really is no point to this that I can see.

The same goes for all the posts of flight cancellations. This is taking on the proportions of the war vs. no war threads over in the non-av forum.

I think a good policy is to consolidate threads in this forum. Reduce a bit of the clutter...

My point exactly, and Singapore_Air started both of those threads. He apparently feels the extra 4% merits a new thread and some more gloating.

Such posts are not useless and are not made for gloating.

I suggest we get back to the topic at hand and stop this bickering and senseless 'conflict of words'.

Not made for gloating?! Who are you kidding SQ_boy?

"I suggest we get back to the topic at hand and stop this bickering and senseless 'conflict of words'." - you mean why doesn't everyone shut up and just let you post all the negative topics you can find about CX? I can almost see the big grin on your face.

If it's not useless, what do you expect people to say in this thread that is any different than the 33% thread?

"I knew it! I told you it was going to be 37%. Oh poor Cathay..."

Perhaps you may reduce the amount of people flaming you by posting all of your news in one thread instead. That way, no one can accuse you of gloating.

To be fair to Singapore_air, his earlier thread was posted well earlier than the press release by CX which only came out today. Although I do agree with Buckfifty re: consolidation.

Logistics aside, this is very sad news - some of these destinations are being severely cut in capacity, such as Vancouver which is going from a twice daily to a daily, and Paris who is seeing a +50% reduction in capacity (from daily flights to thrice weekly).

It seems like that the only long-haul destinations not yet affected by flight cuts are Auckland, Rome, San Francisco, Toronto and New York. How long will that last, I wonder?

True Buckfifity, that consolidation should have been adopted in this case. However, I shouldn't have to stop posting anything to stop people accusing me of gloating.

It's most unfortunate how certain people misconstrue the actual purpose of a news thread and turn it into a slanging match in the hopes that the whole thread is deleted.

Such forms of impertinent childishness can be so very easily avioded.

I think you guys are being way over sensitive. He was transcribing or summarizing what was reported in the press. The titles he used were nearly identical to what I read in the Wall Street Journal. Then, you guys probably should write to the editors of many newspapers and ask them to stop gloating! If he only posted CX's cuts and made no mention of SQ's cuts, then you guys might have a point. But this is simply not the case here. I guess you guys probably have gotten the SAPS (Singapore_Air Paranoia Syndrome).  Acting devilish

How come I'm a Hong Kee and I have no hard feelings on S_Air? Because I'm more biased on SQ. But that does not mean I hate CX, in fact I reckon CX is a great airline too and I've flown them, and I have friends that like CX and SQ too.

But on this net the Hong Kees hate SQ (S_Air) a lot but for the Singaporeans they don't really care. What a shame.

Best Regards

Can't everyone agree that the SARS issue is a problem for all carriers? Why this senseless back and fourth bickering over SQ and CX. Makes no sense to me.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, many a.net members here are way too sensitive. The topic is about CX making further cuts to its network, but it has degenerated into the typical pointless discussions about Singapore_Air, posting of CX & SQ news, and all that gibberish.

Is it so difficult for those of you (you know who you are) to just stay on the topic? It’s getting ridiculous to be honest.

Right, now that’s out of the way, does anyone know how CX’s fifth freedom routes are performing?

Hkg82.

It is really a sad news.  Sad

Now no one want to travel to Hong Kong and not welcome Hong Kong people because of the stupid mainland government. So CX lose of much business and it annouced profit warning. They never did it before! Hope the SARS problem can be solved soon
