Which To London? VS; US; UA

Mon Apr 14, 2003 8:07 am

I'm flying to London with my mom in June, and I wanted to know which airline is the best choice to London. I would like some opinions on the following:

1) Seat pitch. I know US has 33-34" pitch on the A333, but I do not know about VS/UA in coach(744 and 777, respectively). How tight is it? I know that the VS 744 has narrower seats than the A333 and 777. We likely wouldn't be in Econ+ on UA

2) IFE. I know that VS/US have the superior IFE on the A333/744, but is either one better? I understand that there is v:port or whatever the new system on VS is, but what are the chances of that 744(is is still just one 744 with it?) being on EWR-LON?

3) Food. Is there any major difference in general with food between them? I'm talking about more portions in general.

Thanx.

VS: IFE is good on all planes, very good on most, excellent on a select few. Food is good on the flight to America, but crap on the flight from America to Europe, in general (simply because American airline catering companies aren't any good, usually). You can expect 2 meals and some ice cream. Seat pitch - some people claim VS seat pitch is too small, but I haven't noticed any difference between any airlines, and I believe this to be mostly a myth. (There is an issue of some IFE boxes underneath seats on some planes, apparently, but other than that I had the strong impression Economy seat pitch is just as bad on all airlines).

Besides, Virgin Atlantic service tends to be on the friendly side, in my admittedly limited experience.

Why aren't you considering BA at all? I mean, VS is often thought to be the best, but BA is a close second.

Prices I found put BA $100 a person more.

I believe US Airways has the best transatlantic product on their new A333s. 2-4-2 seating, better pitch, great inflight entertainment, great service.

If all you are looking for is basing your decision on IFE, then US Airways ought to be your choice. The Sony Passport system is far superior because I believe it allows to stop and start movies, at your will, which on most other airlines that offer IFE, provide that feature to their premium cabin customers only.

In terms of overall service, including food, in-flight entertainment, and comfort Virgin wins two out of three in Economy. Food is good. IFE is very good, but it is slightly better on Odyssey-equipped VS aircraft, rather than the other IFE program that they offer (I can't remember what it is called). Some 747-400's also have smaller LCD screens on the seat backs. Virgin's seat pitch is standard but is marginally tolerable and at times, unbearable. The seats are hard and the cabin can feel very cramped on a full flight.

United is pretty good across the Atlantic. Nothing outstanding but both the 767-300's and 777's are nice, although the 777's have the 2-5-2 configuration in Economy, which is annoying if you are in the middle of the 5 row seats. UA is basic though. Nothing particularly outstanding.

Virgin Atlantic should be your choice #1 - if you are flying to Britain, choose a British airline.

So, VS11, when he flies to the US (on his inevitable return) he should fly on a US airline, right?

You will get the most seat pitch with US on either the A330 or the 767. To me VS's cabin is quite cramped with only a 31' seat pitch. On the UA 777 it is 31' as well unless your are lucky enough to be on a 777 with Y+ and can snag a seat. Have you tried CO I had a great transatlantic crossing with them in March.

EGGD: You'd fly the airline that just announced retiring Concorde in the 100th anniversary of powered flight, ahead of the airline that single-handedly turned personalized in-flight-entertainment into a common pleasure on long-haul flights? Why?

I would only fly UA, they have the ptv's in coach and they provide wonderful service.
if you think 2" is going to make all the difference then fly for the bigger seat, if you want service and bang for your buck I would fly UA or US.
contrary to what others on this forum think, you'll receive the same service and food and entertainment on all of the carriers you've chosen.

I had a great experience with USAirways transatlantic last year. Their A330 is a terrific plane- quiet, pleasant... a real nice pond-crosser. The food was about average for airline food. Not quite filling, that is. They offered lots of water- they built two pyramids of water bottles in the far aft galley and invited anyone to take as many as they wished. The lavs were good. The flight attendants were FANTASTIC- service oriented, very friendly, I really liked them. Unfortunately, on my return trip from Rome to Philadelphia, the entire cabin crew were making their last flight before furlough. But, hopefully, they are back in the sky, as US is looking better.

Anyhow, back to relevant conversation, I had a great experience and will chose US next time I want to fly transAtlantic.

by the way, forgot to mention the seats.

Legroom is fantastic- compares to AA's MRTC program. It may only be three inches over competitor's offering, but it is noticeable. Some airlines fly 31", but US flies 34" in almost all rows of coach on their A333s. The seats are comfortable as well, with push- button lumbar support. The IFE screen is very nice. They offered a wide selection of films and music.

I'd take US Airways (A330-323X) out of the three.

US offers a great product, legroom,IFE,great seats on the A330.

I've had 2 round trips across the 'pond' with them, both have been excellent.

Why fly any of the above when you can fly the airline that James Bond flies...BA!

What's good enough for Bond, James Bond, is good enough for me  Big thumbs up

US' A330 is fantastic...

UA's 777 service is decent.

VS' coach class is ubercramped.

If I were in your shoes, I'd fly with Virgin, maybe because I'm British.
But UA needs your money at the moment and US Airways (I've heard) are very good. US fly to Gatwick and use the 767 and A330, so you can't guarantee getting to go Airbus. With Virgin Atlantic, you are sure to get either a Jumbo or A340. With UA, you'll get either the 767 or 777.

I'd say go with VS.

All were taken in 2003, so the 767 must still be in use from USA to Gatwick.

Hi Lowfareair,

I've flown US Airways last year on the route FRA-PHL-LGA-PIT-FRA.
The aircraft they used from and to Europe was an A330. On the flights to and from LGA it was A321/320. I was very pleased with all the flights especially with the long-haul flights. The A330 is a great aircraft and entertainment, food and service were really great. So, if you have the chance to fly with US on A330 I would recommend it!!! You'll have a great trip for sure.

Best regards from Frankfurt

If you have time on your hands, consider NZ out of LAX. Yes, it's out of the way, but if you get it issued as one ticket, it may cost the same. NZ's Y product has tons of legroom.

Virgin Atlantic's V|Port system has the same feature. Hours of digital video on demand, seat to seat text messaging, tv shows on demand, hours of CD audio on demand.

Choose Virgin Atlantic!!

I reckon, you should avoid all those airlines at all cost and I think you should travel to Australia, and then take the kangaroo route via SIN with QF! lol may cost a grand or so more, but, u get stopovers in SIN and SYD! lol

I think the Kangaroo route is QF 1 via BKK. Sounds like you may be thinking QF 5 to FRA via SIN. But I like the way your thinking!

But to answer you Question, I have always enjoyed United when it comes to International service. You wont be disapointed with any of the choices. But every single dollar you spend will be extremely helpful to United.
