Having the advantage of being on MSY
's airport management team, I'll throw out a few of my thoughts on the topics listed above:
1) runway 1/19 reconstruction: the tough time will come when we have to pave the area of runway that also serves as an overrun area/displaced threshold for runway 10/28. Runway 28 already has a short displacement on it. The repaving will cause this displacement to be moved 1,000 or so feet to the west. Consequently, the rollout distance for runway 10/28 will be shortened, and the ILS for runway 28 will be OTS for that duration.
2) if F9
were to serve FLL
, I would think that it would be, in effect, a 'milk run' or 'tag' flight, originating or concluding at DEN
, and serving MSY
, sort of like the old TWA JFK
milk run, or my old favorite that I used to fly, CO
3) to my knowledge, Southwest is just interested in concourse B. Once the extension to concourse D is completed, I believe NW
will move over there, and US and US Express will take concourse A. There are plans to remove gates A2 and A4
(occupied by US Express) in order to add taxi cab parking (it is a bit of squeeze in there at times at those two gates).
4) expansion projects (concourse D and additional N/S runway): I see concourse D being extended long before a new N/S runway is done. I don't see the EIS for the runway being completed/accepted in the near future, and the city of Kenner and St. Charles Parish are definitely not for it.
I'm in the minority on this one, but I really don't see it being an advantage at this time, expecially when looking at the costs involved, the time in construction, and the various environmental and funding approvals that are needed.
I think we need to place a higher priority on terminal redevelopment (east end-concourses A and B) than on an additional runway.
5) regarding the proposed airport off to our west, most of us around look at that project, laugh long and loud about it, and give the respect it deserves, none. That project won't happen, FAA will never fund it, the logistics of attaching it to MSY
(locals here will consider I-310),and I wonder about private funding.
