What's Wrong With This A319's Nose Cone?

Thu Apr 17, 2003 12:14 am

This is the second time I've seen this type of nose. . .and the second time I've wondered if there was something wrong with the photograph.

Is this nosecone badly painted, weathered, or what is going on with it? Is this the way the airline wants it to look in another livery?

Anybody?

The caption to the photo itself says that it is taxiing with the wrong nose conme. Something probably happened to the original, and this was the only replacement that they could find on short notice. Maybe you could try to identify the source of the replacement part by the paint job to see where they got it from.

multiple airlines have a parts-pool. so they don't have to buy all the parts and maintain them.

HAHAHA you got me there, I have no idea what airline it came from either. Sounds like you have the beginning of a new contest there, untill someone from tech/ops comes in and gives you the serial number of the part that was replaced. Can anyone ID this?

Airbus manufacturers the radomes.
The come out of the factory like that.
The disscoloration is due to the manufacturing process of the prereg composites when the shape is formed.
It is normal and does not interfere with the radar, etc.

THANK YOU Greg!!

I was starting to wonder if anyone understood my question. Maybe I should have posed it like Spacepope suggested!

Thanks to all for your answers.

If you look at the rollout of some of the other aircraft that are still 'green'--it's likely you'll see the same discoloration on both narrow and widebody radomes.

Technically, I do not know why it happens...it actually could just be paint to identify or test the ability of radar waves to penetrate the polymer shape after the formation....

Oh well..glad to help.

The only thing wrong with the white dotted nose cone, is that the picture should have been taken in TLS or XFW as it is an Airbus factory costume to testfly its aircraft in that way. Rarely seen on aircraft in airline service. I can not come up with a fully technical explanation, but I think Greg comes close. My theory is that they have very big sea gulls with extreme diarrhoea in the Hamburg area!

Ok, no discoloration of composites, but I couldn't resist.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I think VH-CZQ looks cool with the red... ~hic~ red nose.

With so much room in there, couldn't they make the radar dome larger? Wouldn't there be an advantage in having a larger diameter radar?

The SAS A340-300 encountered a bird strike shortly after delivery. So they changed the cone.
