Terror Level Reduced: Time To Open Spotter Areas!

Thu Apr 17, 2003 2:21 am

Now that the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security has reduced the terror threat level from orange to yellow, it is now time to re-open the spotter/airport observation areas that have been closed across the country. If it is necessary to increase security when the threat goes up, it is also necessary to reduce security when the threat is less. If this doesn't occur, we run the path of becoming a police state. I will be writing letters to leaders in Houston because I want the Rankin and Lee Rd. spotter areas reopened at IAH. I hope everyone else contacts their leaders.

There are far more important things to worry about than this.
Put it in perspective.

In all honesty I don't think much is going to change, at least in the next few days. Since we're still in Iraq, a "valid" excuse still exists for all the Kojak-wannabe airport cops to go throwing their weight where they shouldn't.

Hopefully the LHR viewing deck will be up and running before the Easter Holidays are over! If that happens, that'll be so cool!

Jhooper,

That's great, great news. Thank you for the update it is much appreciated. I hope you get the areas at your local airport reopened soon.

Hopefully the National Guard will now take their Humvees home and disappear from LAX.

Greg,

What could possibly be more important than spotting and taking photos of airliners?????

My priorities are completely in prospective.

Then again, a sudden increase in the number of strangers hanging around airport perimeters might raise the alert level again!  Smile

Do you honestly think they are going to reopen these areas. Terrorists are here to stay and airport viewing areas are security areas that need and require constant monitoring...........leave them closed and you reduce the cost of having to have them supervised and security controlled. In the US i think there days are numbered.

Good news though. I will be in transit tomorrow, and I'm feeling better now about spotting/photography tomorrow night.

At least at MCO we have the top of the carpark to go to only after registering with the Airport Authority. And FLL is a 3 hour drive from here. JAX is a 2 hour drive and living in the flight path to OCF there is only small GA aircraft that fly in.

Amsterdams observation deck was closed?

They didn't close any spotting areas in Canada.

Amsterdam? Why?

Ya,

That QF707 is quite a site. Too bad he does not land it there. He keeps his other planes there tho. All though we have had a couple of JT registered a/c at OCF.

DeltAirlines,

How far from MCO do you live. As well as SFB. I work at SFB for Avion Jet center, if you wanted to meet and go to MCO on SAT or SUN. Unless you want to meet on Fri afternoon. I get off work at around 1430-1500. All depends on whats going on.

I'm flying in tonight and staying at the Marriott World Centre on International Drive until Sunday. The people I'm travelling with want to go to Universal on Saturday and Disney on Sunday (for the parade), so those days are pretty much out. I don't really know how far it would be to get to either SFB or MCO from the Marriott, but I will try to consider it. I'll probably let you know later tonight if I can do it.

Just drove by FLL. As of 9am 17Apr viewing area is still closed off with
concrete blocks blocking access to the area from Perimeter road.

I live in TPA which has been spotter friendly since 9/11, but I've gotten bored with traffic. Now that terror level is down I'll travel to MCO in a few weeks.

727Lover,

What are the best spotting areas around TPA. With the highway being right along the runways you can't park there. Any good places please let me know.

"With the highway being right along the runways you can't park there."

OH YEAH!!!????

I've been parking on the highway for 2 years now! for 36L arrivals, granted I don't sit too long.

And then there's the secret fishing hole. Last Saturday another photographer and I spent an hour there, I shot about 20 aircraft against a deep blue cloudless sky. Got my pics back today. They're terrific!

Also for 36L, there's a park and a secluded beach:
I'm not 100% positive, but I suspect this is where Art Brett took these.

A liittle high wing for me, I prefer the fishing hole.

Arrivals on 18R:
mornings- the bowling alley on Hillsbourough Ave.
afternoons-northwest commerce park

Departures on 36R:
Raytheon area on the SE side of field. I would be a little cautious in this location.

Delta hanger area- be really careful here!

2 parking garages: long term & short term. Since 9/11, no one has EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER bothered me here!

Economy lot next to 36R.

Plus there are some spots for morning arrivals on 36L-too complicated to go into right now.  Nuts

This place is spotter heaven: ample traffic, no hassles. It's just that the traffic has gotten kinda boring for me.  Sad

Sorry, very sorry, but when the US government takes away a liberty it is never returned. With this absurdly titled "Homeland Security" department we now have, expect to lose liberty at an ever increasing rate.

IND's areas are still blocked by cement blocks....have been since September 11th. Given the look of them they are forever closed....one so much as has a small tree growing in it now...

(I still think its funny that they moved the taxi cab holding zone next to where the spotter park used to be...the area is now a haven for bored taxi cab drivers who you can spot 24 hours a day standing around talking in the old spotter area...think about it for a moment...)

So yes, what I'm saying is...they've closed the spotter areas and replaced one with nothing but taxi drivers....and no, I'm not kidding.

Dunno how the City of Houston is compared to the City of Orlando, but many people have written letter to the Mayor, City Council and the TSA Manager for the airport. Still they have not opened Frontage Rd. Good luck with the city of Houston and the State of Texas.

Texas? What Can You Expect

Tue Apr 22, 2003 10:55 pm

What can you expect from Texas, a low-life beurocrat. A very stupid population. I think that we can have spotting and security co-existing. A cop comes and checks that you have a cam. not a bazooka launcher, and then leaves you alone, gives you a check that you were checked by him. I would be willing to be inspected. Would you?
