The gist of it is: labor cost reductions won't be enough to take on the low cost carriers.

Interesting article..

I am however curious how they compared fares from DFW-PHX on both AA and Southwest. Not possible..

They probably meant Dallas (in general) to Phoenix.

I believe the Wright Ammendment makes this impossible for Southwest. They cannot offer tickets directly from LUV to Phoenix. If you want to do that, you have to buy two seperate tickets and make your own connection somewhere. I doubt that Fortune meant to use this as a comparison. There must be a misprint or an oversight somewhere.

Not a great comparison, but despite the inconvenience of having to chech and recheck baggage at ELP or ABQ.....the fact that it is never advertised.....the fact that you cannot book it on a single reservations phone call......and AA, HP, etc offer nonstops where the best WN trip between DAL & PHX is a one stop connection...the O&D figures I have seen show that WN has captured 11 or 12% of the Dallas-Phoenix market at an average fare of $203 each way. This compares to an average fare of $262 on AA and $214 on HP.

Some people will do anything to be able to fly Southwest.
