Last SIA A340 Flight Was 14 April.

Thu Apr 17, 2003 6:50 pm

This I haven't seen officially but a few A340 crew advised the last flight was on 14 April 2003 from Istanbul via Dubai to Singapore. The A340s are parked at various locations around Changi Airport but none at the passenger terminals.

If it is correct then sad news.

So Singapore Airlines Limited have retired the whole Airbus fleet? / will retire by 31 May 2003?!

Wow.

You only have to drive around Changi along the Coast Rd to see the number of planes parked up. Quite worrying really and not very funny...

Ejazz... do you know what is happening to all the A340 and A310 crew?

BusinessFlyer

I understand most will forced to clear their annual leave after the fleet is grounded allowing the Airline time to decide their fate.

Current rumour is most of the A310 crew will go to the A340-500 and surprisingly the A340 crew will be spread over all fleets. This might be due to the timing of the fleet grounding more than anything else.

Cheers.

This is pretty sad news. I was on two SQ A340s in 2001. They will be missed.

I have actually received the new Singapore Airlines Group timetable for 30 March to 25 October 2003 and I can find no A343 flights despite a Celestar seat map.

Oooh harsh!

Fortunately I don't think Singapore Airlines Limited followers care either way.

For shame! Tsk tsk.

And anyway, the 777 is better (climb performace, more pax, whatever) though in this environment, more pax capacity isn't that favourable.

It's a shame how aviation enthusiasts bash Airbus and the wonderful A310!

That was sudden... though not unexpected. At least they'll have two less sets of fixed costs to deal with.

Just because you have this ingrained personal preference for two engines, doesn't mean the plane is bad rubbish.

Very Sad indeed!
I happen to have an old SIA newsletter, and in that there was a whole spread about the A340-300E joining the fleet and wha preparations were being made etc...
Sad to see it go.

Alas, you're right....

...it has more to do with its slower cruising speed, shorter range, pathetic climb, weaker payload ability, lower power/weight ratio, etc  Big grin

True ConcordeBoy. 9V-SPJ, I have that issue, as well as an April 1991 Outlook magazine mentioning the order of the 15 MD-11s.
