Zip Fleet Offered To WestJet

But why would they want it?

WestJet Was Offered Air Canada Zip Fleet - Report
Thursday April 17, 10:18 am ET

TORONTO (Dow Jones)--The chief executive of WestJet Airlines Ltd. said an aircraft lessor offered him the fleet operated by Air Canada's Zip subsidiary, a newspaper report said Thursday.
Clive Beddoe told the National Post the lessor offered to sell the airplanes operated by the low-cost subsidiary, which competes directly with WestJet in western Canada.

According to the newspaper, the offer wasn't part of Air Canada's court- supervised reorganization under bankruptcy protection.

Beddoe told the newspaper he isn't interested in Air Canada's assets, but what happens to the airline could affect WestJet's plans for 2004.

WestJet and Zip operate the same type of aircraft.

this is no big deal.air canada said back on apr01 that the fleet of b737 b747 and bae146 willbe retired.so im sure the lessor is just trying to get some money for the 737,s..for that matter im sure the lessor would sell them to any airline.zip wants and will get an airbus fleet within a year thats no secret.

Not a bad article. I guess it depends on where your loyalties lie as to how you spin this story. I would guess that the aircraft in question would have to go dirt cheap otherwise I don't think it fits in with WestJets 737 NG shift strategy.

Aircraft lessors regularly shop their aircraft around. This is just a case of Clive making hay out of a normal business inquiry....the intent is to reduce confidence in the longevity of ZIP which may reduce their bookings & drive people to Westjet.

Clive is just an aggressive airline CEO. It's nice to finally see one strong enough in Canada to be able to put the boots to AC given AC's traditional dominance of the industry & competitive bullying.

I said before in another thread that I have a hunch that AC might phase out its 732 fleet rather quickly. Well, looks like I may be right.

If no airline wants them, then it's the desert for those 732s. It's true they aren't worth much - only about $2 million CDN for a 732 compared to something like about $35-50 million CDN for a 737NG or an A319.

WestJet does not want any more 732s in its fleet, period. It's commited to replacing its 732 fleet with those 73Gs.

Canjet is next on AC's giveaway list. You can bet on that.

It was amazing the numbers that Cessnapimp told me about how different the fuel loads were for an Airbus narrow body compared to the 732 to the same destination from YYZ. When you factor in the cost of fuel these day....it makes sense why WJ doesn't want them!

But that leaves the door open to a smaller airline like Canjet who uses that type of aircraft because of the low cost lease, or is it because they had a longterm lease on them, any how, I hope the life is not sucked out of those classics!!

The problem for ZIP is that their low cost structure is based heavily on the fully-depcreciated 732's. If they were replaced by the 319/320, ZIP costs would rise.

Perhaps AC should transfer ALL 732's from mainline/Tango to ZIP.

Actually, the AC 732 fleet is young by 732 standards....many were built in the early 80's.

Can any old 732 be converted to a combi? Or do they have to be build from the MFG as a combi? I ask this because I remember hearing Alaska Airlines was looking for a few spare 732 Combis a while back...

Maybe CDN North of First Air will pick a few up? It would be nice to see Air Tindi get a 732 but that will not happen.

I'll have one  Wink/being sarcastic

Wasn't there a thread in which the poster was trying to start a 767 fund to ferry A.netters around the world? Perhaps a 732 is more in their price range Big grin
