For me, Laker.
Freddie Laker was a true aviation pioneer; at least his inspiration is alive and well in Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic.

Service was good, too.

Honorable mention goes to Air Florida. I flew them to London in 1983 and the service was the best I have experienced to date.

It is hard to imagine a world where a trail blazer like Pan Am isn't still flying. I wouldn't care to see them come back in a limited way just to have their name on a few planes though.

Many think the golden age of aviation died on 9/11. I think the golden age died during the time when global giants like Pan Am, and TWA, lost their luster.

Need I really say? Sadly I must admit that if the real Piedmont were still flying, it would just be another of the cattle car carriers prevalent today.

I want to remember the classic airline names when there was a difference, when they wanted one on board, not the atmosphere of today where the employees act as though they are doing you a favor.

I note that WN, for all it's touted frivolity, still has no "Spirit of the Braniff Brothers" paint scheme. That, in my humble opinion, would show class.

Hey IMissPiedmont

Fri Apr 18, 2003 12:20 pm

Why in the world would WN want to put a "Spirit of Braniff Brothers" paint scheme on one of their jets.

BN and TI tried their darndest to put WN out of business BEFORE they even got off the ground. BN played some very dirty tricks on WN, just like AA played on BN and Legend.

For you to honestly think that WN should "honor" anything remotely associated with BN is flawed thinking I believe.

Heck, WN even went so far as to take BN and TI to court to prove that they played dirty tricks on WN and BN had to pay WN some serious $$$$. So what BN did instead was give/or lease WN some 727's for some time.

In order:

1. TWA (such a classic, loved to fly TWA)
2. Piedmont (used to fly them thru the DAY hub)
3. Pan Am (never got to fly on, but along with TWA, a classic)
4. Braniff (wild colors, but out of business before my time)
5. People Express (never flown, but would probably be still be cheap to fly on today--maybe cheaper than WN)

Aspen Airlines

Fond memories of getting to the slopes, without having to use Hostage Airlines. Any ticket to Denver and you got to Aspen Airlines.

Their Convair turboprops were the e-ticket arrival for the week of skiing before everything became too corporate and expensive..

Like I said, fond memories...

burrules, you are on the money man, i wish psa would come back. as someone noted, one of the "original" low cost carriers. i miss seeing aircal's 737 fleet landing into tahoe airport three times a day. but out west, lately, i think a lot miss reno air, especially those in reno. dAAmn you american, declare chap 11 and go under for once. i wish somebody would buy aa and tear it apart like they have done to so many other carriers.

I'd love to see Ansett Australia flying again. And i'd also like to see the original Australian Airlines flying again too.
Vh-daq- Kendell really is still operating, just under a different guise- REX(Regional Express) and actually i like the REX livery better anyhow.

I would really like to see Swissair back in the skies. They were a really nice airline until they wanted to control the world (or at least the European aviation world).

Another carrier which I would like to see back in the sky is Piedmont. That was a great airline, with a great spirit. I really miss the pacemakers!

Well, there are many more. It's always sad when a carrier disappears. But the ones above are the most important to me.

Well Jay, everything you wrote is correct to a point. The point being that it is not "flawed thinking."

WN is an airline with a history of humour and silliness. And, although the BN of the 1970s was indeed somewhat heavy handed, the brothers Braniff were pioneers in Texas airline history.

I stand firmly by my wish.
The day you stop learning is the day you should die.

In a word, Wardair. This Canadian carrier knew exactly what it meant to take care of its customers, regardless of class. To compare the Y service of WD to the so-called J service today wouldn't even be a fair fight.

Typical Y service included:

-very comfortable seat on super clean aircraft
-pre take-off sweets
-free inflight entertainment
-free (and very open) bar
-free WD items like playing cards, kids wings, etc.
-choice of three hot entrees (at least one was always steak)
-royal doulton china
-fresh flower with meal set-up
-dessert trolly (with WD 'special coffee/whipped cream)
-pre landing sweets

and best of all, super attentive, friendly crew

Yes I know that they only really ever made money selling aircraft, but its nice to think back once in a while.

Sigh.
Up, up and Away!

Being in Denver, of course I would want to see Western Pacific return to the sky with the Bart Simpson plane and other assorted fun paint schemes.

Everyone has forgotten about British Caledonian with that cool middle ages looking logo.

Of course we would all want to have carriers like PA and EA back during their good days.

Republic (I grew up seeing their DC-9's at Central Wisconsin in the early 80's)
National (the recent Las Vegas-based one... hot meals and decent leg room in coach, and relatively cheap upgrades to first class)
Legend (imagine Midwest Express, but with satellite PTV's like JetBlue)

Pan American I did get to fly them a long time ago....I remember for sure from SFO to LAX and I think the other one was LAX JFK , it was on an Airbus A310, 232 seating ?

Also UTA I love their green doors and dark blue tail and rear fuselage..... they have interesting routing from Paris all the way to the Pacific via Djakarta I think to SYD MEL and auckland and on to LAX.
