What Do You Think Of Delta?

Mon Nov 29, 1999 8:18 am

Hi all,
I just got back from a trip to SLC. As you all know there's still alot of holiday travel going on, especially with Delta out of SLC. With Delta's declining service, it was a wonder to me why most people fly Delta and get poor service, but do it shamelessly because of ticket price.
What I want to know, is that would you fly Delta just to get a lower rate, or do you indeed love Delta Air Lines?
Do you think their service is adequate? I certainly don't. Their service leaves much to be desired, but, service aside, I still like Delta Air Lines. How about you?

What I think is that we should all choose our airline for how much service you get for the price you pay. If you get a fairly reasonable ticket price and adequate service, by all means fly that airline. But if you pay much more for the same service on another airline, then that is good enough reason to not fly on that airline. Basically what I'm saying is don't choose an airline JUST because it's cheap, you'll get cheap service to go with it. Be reasonable, choose an airline with a fairly low price and good service, but don't overpay. Don't get screwed.
Do you think that the main reason Delta is the largest airline in terms of passenger boardings just beacause it's CHEAP? I think so.

So, tell me, what do you choose an airline for, service or price?

I hope I didn't offend any Delta lovers out there.

I personally like Delta but I don't think you would offend anyone, you are just stating your opinion. I've seen people in this forum writing bad things about American. I always choose American or another airline as long as they codeshare with American because that's where I get all my miles, I'm happy with American, I'm just used to fly with them. I was thinking of flying Iberia on my next trip to New York because they had a cheap fare and they are part of One World but I later found out American had an even cheaper fare, so I gave up my reservation with Iberia and booked my trip with American.

I'm usually with United or a United milage partner, so when they partnered up with Delta, I decided to try them out. I've since been on 9 Delta/Delta Connection flights (everything from EMB-120 to B767-300). I've had good service with them... no complaints. They are usually very nice to me and helpful. I also like their fleet much more than UA's... I'd pay much more to buy a Delta ticket to keep me off of a United 737 or 777.

Hi, I have flown them many times the latest was a Delta Express flight from ALB to MCO on a 737-200, the service was great!! The flight was very smooth, no turbulance, no bumps on landing. My travel agent screwed up the return flight booking me on a flight that was discontinued. Regardless, Delta got me home on a flight into ATL on an L-1011 and then from there on to ALB on a 727 at their expense. That was good of them to do this even though it was the travel agent's fault. Because of their great service I am flying them again back to MCO in May 2000.

The Cheap Seat Will Get Sold First..

Americans are cheap. Period. A good fare is by far more important than service to the vast majority of US air travellers. This is why that ALL growth has been at the low end of the fare market, and that we have a plethora of Southwest "copycat, 'me too' " low fare airlines. Also, this is why "First Class/High Fare" airlines such as Regent, McClain, MGM, and UltrAir never saw their second birthday. How else do you explain United Shuttle, Delta Express, and MetroJet being set up? I have no doubt that if some airline offered a R/T flight to/from LAX-JFK for only $49, and the only "condition" was that the gate agent got to kick you in the groin prior to boarding, the flight would STILL be oversold by a five digit figure...

But When The Seat Is Not Cheap ....

......you'll find much better service in the 'forward cabin' of Continental or TWA (at least a couple of years ago). I agree that economics dictates the large fraction of airline loads, but DL's product in the forward cabin -- for which they charge the same or more than other carriers -- is generally second-rate if you ask me.

The days of gourmet meals are largely a thing of the past in air travel, but a dried up piece of 'Blue Ridge' chicken with a tiny scoop of potato salad as a First Class lunch from DFW to the west coast? They could do better.

I usually fly Delta when I go from Chicago to Pensacola, FL. I have found Delta's service in Coach to be good. After being delayed in Pensacola for six hours after our plane had mechanical difficulties, I received a $150 voucher in the mail a few weeks later. I was quite impressed by this and didn't hesitate to use the voucher when I flew to Hartford, CT. I plan to continue flying with Delta.

As for comparing Delta with other airlines, I will have to say that at least for the Coach cabin they are all pretty much alike. I have also flown USAirways, American and United and the service they provided was very similar to Delta's. My prime reason for staying with Delta is that they offer the most jet flights to Pensacola.

Not That I'm Biased

First let me explain that my period key is inop

Yes we've had our problems in the past, but I really think that those days may be over I've flown four times ATL-SEA RT in the past six weeks, and I've seen the aircraft from a mechanics point of view, and eaten the same food as other pax I don't think its anything I'd order out for, but it was a BIG improvement over those 'SKY DELI' lunches (bags with the barf pre-installed)

But we must all remember that price will win every time Southwest did a survey to ask its pax "would you pay an extra $5 for an assigned seat?" Three guesses what the response was
