I'm not sure of the exact QF definition, but Cityflyer seems to be certain planes that fly high density routes i.e MEL-SYD, SYD-BBN, MEL-BBN and most of them are heavy aircraft type i.e the 767-200/300.

Here is the Qantas definition:
http://www.qantas.com.au/info/flying/businessTraveller/cityflyer
The Cityflyer is aimed at the business market between Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane (BNE), Canberra, Adelaide and Perth.

Cityflyer services are not aircraft type specific, B747, B767, B737 and A330s all operate Cityflyer services.

146 and Dash 8 services SYD-CBR are also classed as CityFlyer flights.

Cityflyer allows Qantas to offer higher services on certain sectors. If you look at the description of services it does differ to the Standard Mainline services.

the cityflyer service is purely designed to attract business back from flying virgin. the only inflight change is on flights from east coast to perth and vv. where they now have tray service meals, and hot ones, last time I flew, the frittata was veryy yummy  Smile sorry, they also offer complimentary newspapers before 9am and beer and wine complimentary after 12pm the other aspect is that cityflyer has branded gates, and dedicated carosels and help desks and it is mainly designed for the business traveller, to speed things up.

in their ads for cityflyer, they also seem to tout the very frequent service. usually half-hourly syd-mel.

QANTAS747 - CityFlyer has been around since before Virgin - I believe the original idea was to draw business pax away from Ansett. Another quick correction - the free beer/wine is after 4pm.

Some more info on CityFlyer: The flights are very frequent, which is quite useful. You used to be able to use your mobile phone on board right up until doors are closed, and then as soon as doors are opened at the other end, however on the last few CityFlyer flights I have been on, this hasn't been the case. I don't know if this is a policy change, or if I have just struck a couple of over-zealous crews. I am on another one this afternoon - I will see then.

If you want to see what individual timetables are like, go to http://www.qantas.com.au/flightinfo/dyn/ScheduleSearch and search for schedules between two CityFlyer cities. This should give you an idea of the frequencies. From experience, SYD-MEL is generally every half hour, or every hour during slower times of day/days of the week, while SYD-BNE is generally every hour, but every half hour during the morning (to 9am) and evening (5pm to 7pm).

Hope this is useful for you

QANTAS747-
There are product changes on ALL CityFlyer services (not just PER).

Free beer and wine is offered in Y/C after 1600 on all CityFlyer flights except PER where it's offered with and after 1200.

Newspapers are before 0900 on ALL CityFlyer services.

The new mobile phone policy (effective Nov 2002) is as follows:
Mobile phones can be used on ALL A330, 767, 737 and 717 services (whether CityFlyer or not) on BOARDING and ONLY from an aerobridge. The other requirement is that all other cabin doors other than L1 (and L2 on A330) are closed. This is irrespective of refuelling operations. You cannot turn your mobile on upon arrival because galley doors will likely be open and refuelling will have commmenced.

If the inbound is late and boarding takes place during galley servicing then the CSAs will make a PA syaing mobile phones cannot be used.

The TRIAL was conducted on CityFlyer services only and you could use your mobile on arrival (during the trial) but they found that delayed flights were losing even more time as galley servicing couldn't start until the last pax was off. Hence the new policy, which was endorsed by CASA.

On ADL CityFlyer services you can't use your mobile due to the stand off bays.

BNE CSAs make a PA saying mobile must be switched off before boarding because some gates that 717s use do not have an aerobridge so they want things to be standard. Though if you are using your phone onboard (and the a/c is at an aerobridge) then we won't tell you off.

VirginFlyer-
Free beer and wine is after 1200 on PER services. Also you are quoting the old policy for mobile use (from the trial). The new poilcy is above.

I think it is also to give a name like KLM's City Hopper, United Shuttle etc.
Personally I don't see a diffrence,i've flown a few city flyer flights and it all seems the same. I'll be on another one to Sydney in June. Oh the flight time arrivals and depatures screens are seperate which does make it easier to find and they tend to be at the front few gates so you don't have to walk that far
