Taiwan bars visitors from SARS hot spots
By James Peng and Russell Blinch

TAIPEI/TORONTO, April 27 (Reuters) - Taiwan said on Sunday it would bar visitors from SARS hot spots China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Canada as the island reported its first known SARS death and alarm about the virus spread around the world.

==============
This would spell very very very bad news for airlines, especially Cathay which has many flights a day from Hong Kong to Taipei/Kaohsiung.

SQ would also probably have to discontinue SIN-TPE-LAX since even if all they ferry are non Singaporean passengers to TPE and LAX and vv, their crew will not be able to spend the night in TPE.

I sincerely hope that the rest of the world will not follow suit and stigmatise citizens of SARS-affected countries. After all, Taiwan is one itself! Would they want other countries doing the same to them?

I thought that Taiwan was actually only suspending landing visas for one month? Basically if HK/Singaporean/Canadian nationals wanted to go to Taiwan, they had to get a visa rather than having it issued on arrival.

"Yu said Taiwan would stop issuing visitor and resident visas to people from China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Canada. Citizens of these areas who hold multiple-entry Taiwan visas would also be denied entry, he said. "

Actually I think it's the 14-day visa that has been suspended. Normal visas are still being issued and travel is still allowed. let's not try and blox this even more out of proportion than it already is.

The only way to solve this problem is to stop travel. Just think if all travel was stopped for a week or two...... yes it would be hard but better then the way its being done now.

This virus is VERY serious, its not normal FLU. Are people over reacting... YES. Do they have the right.... YES.

I just wish this would go... NOW.

Well draconian measures (which my government is an expert at!!) are the best way to solve this problem. Which is why even though Singapore and Hong Kong started with one case each at around the same time, today Hong Kong has ten times the number of cases than Singapore.

Anyway how has Third world Vietnam managed to contain it successfully, but First World Singapore and Hong Kong seem to have some problems?

CX does not fly to KHH afaik, it is KA that does HKG-KHH.

Vietnam did not contain it that successfully, but one should not forget that it is also quite serious in (only) northern Vietnam and many cases were reported, also covered. The south seems to be ok but rumor has it that there were to covered up cases.

One should also remember that France sent a team of medical professionals to help Vietnam at the French Hospital Hanoi. UN sent a team to investigate at Hanoi as well.

I believe HK also has higher population density than Singapore which is one reason why the spread. They are close to Guangdong and they get many visitors from Guangdong everyday.
