SAS New Livery

Tue Nov 30, 1999 5:51 am

The new livery SAS introduced fairly recently is impressive! The red engines and dark blue tail really set it off. Too bad American didn't adopt such a color scheme. It would have been a perfect update of their current livery, which would seem to be in need of freshening up.

yes, it is very impressive. a very mature look. they also have "poems" by the foreward door. a clever touch.

I think their new livery seems very flashy and eyecatching , I always liked SAS's scheme ( Accept the first one ).. 1 question though.. do SAS fly any MD-11 or DC-10?

I agree. I like it alot. I specially like the detail of the text "Scandinavian Ailines" on the fuselage. It's a brighter color than the rest of the fuselage, although the fuse seems to be all white. And the engines and tail - perfect.

To answer Thai747's question, I can say that SAS don't fly DC10 nor MD11. They had a couple of DC10's but they were replaced by the B767. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It's not to be conservative, but I think I liked the old livery better.

I have heard that the new 737-600 are called 'the pigs' among pilots (probably the pilots not yet qualified on them?) due to their short fat bodies and off white color. But I have to agree with you that the new livery is not all that bad compared to what we see out there.

Concerning the DC10s they used to be the workhorse of SAS long distance fleet, but the got rid of them some 10 years ago. Their only widebodies today are some 15 763s. SAS never had MD11s.

I have to say I'm in two minds about the new SAS livery. It seems perverse to paint only part of the engine nacelles red, and the titles on the fuselage are virtually invisible under most lighting conditions. The blue tail stands out well though (as it does on the new Delta colourscheme).

SAS have a very good website at and this also features the new colours. (Sorry I don't know how to create a link).

Finally, B737s have been known (at least to British spotters) as 'pigs' for a long time, probably going back to -100 series days when they had short fat fuselages.

I definitely prefer the old livery to the new although the new livery is not too bad . The titles on the fuselage, like Skylinepigeon said, are basically invisible though pretty cool looking when you realize its actually there. Never knew about the poems! Other than that it looks really pretty ordinary - another boring 'all white' fuslage.
I've flown on 9V-SPK.
