Your Opinion Of DL's 767-400

Mon Apr 28, 2003 8:06 am

Hi guys,

I'm taking a trip to SFO, taking Delta from FLL. On the FLL-ATL leg I'll be on a 764, then a 763 to SFO and then two 764's on the way back. I'm really excited because the 767 is my favorite plane (of course, haven't been on a 777), and it's my first time on Delta. Is it true that DL's 764's are really cramped compared to CO's layout? Is it really that bad? Is the service at least better than on AA? Will they feed me anything? Any comments are welcome.....

With back-to-back trips to LAX a few weeks ago, I decided to take the opportunity to do exactly that (compare the 764's of both operators).

On the outbound I flew Delta, because I needed a few more trips to ensure my Medallion status for the next year. I flew EWR-ATL-LAX, with the ATL-LAX leg on a 764. The pseudo-BizElite seats were decent, a step up from regular domestic first class but nowhere near what I would expect for a long haul, such as the upcoming ATL-HNL trip, in excess of 9 hours. Service was just above average, and it was nice having a PTV as it was a daytime flight and I had no business to finish on the way. Food was up to par with a Continental midcon flight, such as IAH-LAX.

Returning, I made up my mind to brave coach class, this time for just over 90 minutes on LAX-SLC. I woke up very early for this one (I usually don't fly any earlier than 8am on my returns from a business trip, this one left at 6:30 or so), and brought a cup of coffee aboard to wake myself up. My favorite thing about DL 764's is how huge the coach cabin looks when you enter. It's a sea of seats, going almost all the way back. I took my seat at about the middle of the first cabin, and found the seat to be very tight. Legroom was pretty poor, but the seat was well padded. I fell asleep after the beverage service, and woke up on short final to SLC.

Three days later, I took a CO 764 EWR-IAH, connecting to another (Hawaii config). I flew EWR-IAH in coach, even though my EUA cleared, just to see how it was. The extra inch of legroom was noticeable, and I think CO's seats are a little thinner. However, they are not as cushy as DL's, but the PTV's were key. Edge went to CO in coach, I think.

I connected to the red-eye to LAX, this time not playing games, I went in First. The miniature BF cabin in front was full, and needless to say, I slept like a baby in my favorite business class seat. I don't see how CO and DL compare in the front cabin. They are two completely different products and should be viewed as such.

Bottom line, for a short to medium-haul, Delta's 764's are good, but since CO's are long haul ships, they are bound to be more comfortable. Nevertheless, I was not disappointed by DL, and I wouldn't hesitate to fly on one again (in First).

I flew the CO 767-400 from CDG to EWR. Plane is very nice. The seats are comfortable and the PTV's are nice because they have wider screens than on some carriers. My only complaint with the 767-400 on CO is the absence of a mid-cabin lavatory. They are all in the back. Kind of pointless.

Regardless, a very good flight.

Having not flown the CO 764's I cannot comment on their aircraft. The DL 764 is of standard Y configuration. It has sufficient leg room for me ( I am 5'8" tall) and still had enough legroom to move around. In all fairness the last DL 764 I took was from LAX-ATL and it 100% full so did not get an empty seat next plus I was in the first Y cabin with the fewer amount of row on the window.

I have flown on 2 DL 767-400's, both thimes in Economy class, and I was very impressed. The first flight was a short one...MSY-ATL...only 1 hour. I was immediately impressed by the plane's 777-style interior...it seemed MUCH more roomy than DL 762/763's. I found the seats to be comfortable and the legroom decent.

My real test of the jet came in December 2001 from ATL to LAX nonstop, which was about 4h and 45 min. My opinion of the aircraft did not change even on that flight....overall very impressed, and it is now my favorite Delta aircraft.

You will enjoy your 764 flight, it is quite a plane.

Have fun!

I took a trip as an unaccompanied minor when DL first got their 764s. They had probably been in service 1 month or less and I flew the 764 from ATL-PBI. They gate agents were extremely cool, and were nice enough to let me experience First Class. I was amazed. I got to play games and watch some of a movie the whole way there. It was an awesome plane, because it was brand new. You could still smell how new it was. An awesome plane and an awesome trip.

Thanks for the replies guys, I´m still worried because I´m 6 feet 1" and I keep reading about the poor legroom......nothing to do now, just brave it!! It doesn´t matter as long as I´m flying!

The aircraft is a nice flyer, but the F-class cabin struck me as something of a cattle car compared to the 767-200 and -300, though they do not have the in-seat PTV.

In the economy cabin, the seats seem well padded and contoured with decent back support. In economy you'll probably be better off in the newer -400 as opposed to the -200/300. One thing I noticed: there is a small economy cabin right behind F class, and at the rear of this small section, there are a couple of washrooms, and believe it or not, a row of center seats placed next to them, so you'd have the washroom traffic to your left and right during the flight. I don't envy folks who get stuck here.

DL 764 = cramped (I'm 6' tall).
Ok for short hops, but I'd never fly them LAX-HNL compared to the legroom the competition offers.
