Singapore Airlines Reduces Capacity... Again

Tue Apr 29, 2003 6:43 am

From schedules on Singapore Airlines Limited's high quality website http://www.sia.com.sg the Airline is to reduce schedules again in May 2003.

There will be one daily flight from Singapore to Hong Kong - SQ860 departing Singapore at 0830 and arriving at Hong Kong at 1215.

However, there are two return flights to Singapore departing at 1330 and 1830 respectively and arriving at 1705 and 2205 respectively with the flight numbers SQ859 and SQ865 respectively.

In addition, SYD is currently seeing Jubilee 200 services which will return to normal Jubilee 300 services in May and on some days, SYD will receive three MEGATOPS a day and then will have three Jubilee 300 services cut again or something, it's quite confusing when you can't be bothered.

SGN is downgraded to two 3TEN services a day instead of the two JUBILEE ER / one of each services before the capacity cuts.

Actually the scheduling is weird. I think the Airline is combining services. Shanghai PVG has one daily 773 flight in May from Singapore but has two flights coming out - the incoming 773 and a 772 from some place.

Anyway, we all hope and pray that the Airline pulls through this testing time with success.

I am also curious as to why wage cuts haven't been imposed upon all staff members.

"One flight has been cancelled today but we have not reached a decision on subsequent flights yet. We are monitoring the situation and are reviewing the impact of the decision on our flights to Taipei," said a spokeswoman for Singapore Airlines Limited.

The flight also went on to Tokyo Narita I think.

Actually Hong Kong is still maintaing two daily flights, only thing is that they downgraded both flights to the B772s. There will not be any cuts for HKG as both flights are provide wonderful conenctions to Europe, Australiasia and Middle East. Also due to the fact that these two flights have exsisted in SQ's HKG - SIN v.v for a long period of time, except that 866/865 was actually 861/862 before.

Also PVG gets 2 flights on Friday, Saturday and SUnday - both 772s while Monday - Thursday the B773.

Best Regards

I see, but the Singaporeair.com schedules indicate only one flight to HKG but two from HKG. Weird?

On a related note, a JP Morgan analyst expects SQ to make an operating loss of S$167MM or US $93.6MM for the financial year ending NEXT March, but he expects the SIA Group to make a profit because of the subsidiaries. He expects SIA to take a $175MM pretax charge because of staff layoffs and writedown of equipment costs related to the early retirement of the A310 fleet.

Source: http://www.atwonline.com

While the one-time charges are almost a given, SIA always seems to pull something out of its hat at the end of the FY ... for example, last year they suddenly recognized profits from the sale of a stock made three years beforehand.... coughcoughcough...

I am confused. I thought SQ was retiring the A310 and yet the news article above suggests that they are still being scheduled. Does anybody know the status...?

Singapore_Air, the staff are already being paid a pittance, they are highly overworked and underpaid, and to cut their salaries would be a very painful decision for them.

Someone just told me today that his brother-in-law who is in SQ got a 20% paycut. Or is that for senior managers and above only?

I think it's different for different stations. Right now in HKG every staff needs to use up all of their annual leaves before July, If things don't get better, then no-pay leave on ca certain day for every week. Otherwise salary cut and reduction of staff.

Different positions have different cuts, usually M1 have a higher percentage, then M2, M3, then normal staff I believe.

Best Regards
