United's 'Round The World Service

Tue Apr 29, 2003 11:25 am

Could anyone tell me exactly when United reinstated the 'Round the World service in the late-90s? My guess is April 1999, but I was looking for something a bit more accurate.

A brief history of United's 'Round the World service would be excellent...if anyone's willing!

Thanks,
Derek

I thought the 'Round-The-World' flight was discontinued again after 9/11? I did a flight search on UAL.com and it is saying that market is not served by United.

The UA RTW service was discontinued well before 9/11. Although they went halfway around then back.

I hope they will fly this route again one day.

RTW was supposed to replaced by ORD-DEL but the plan was cancelled after 9.11

United operated a 'Round the world flight from the mid 90s until the Asian economic crisis (ca. 1997). Initially, a 767-300ER flew from LAX-JFK-LHR-DEL-HKG with a 747-400 from HKG-LAX. (and vice versa). United did not have fifth freedom rights from HKG-DEL, so it could only send pax on the HKG-DEL flight who were coming from LAX and points beyond, and only pax on the DEL-HKG who were going to said destinations.

Even with the lack of 5th freedom rights crippling passenger loads, the cargo on the DEL-HKG/HKG-DEL sector was lucrative, so United introduced the 747-400 on those legs at one point.

The route was reborn in 1999 and continued for slightly over a year until late 2000 with a new routing of LAX-IAD-LHR-DEL-HKG, this time with all legs except LHR-DEL being 747-400s (I believe IAD-LHR was either a 747-400 or 777-200). It was one of the first route casualties following the start of the economic downturn in mid 2000.

This route was suspended after the Asian Financial Crisis. Before that, ALL FLIGHTS were flown by the B 767-300 except HKG-LAX (Vice Versa). That route was reinstated in 2000 or 2001 (I forgot!) and it went ALL B 747-400! At one point they planned to replace HKG-DEL, as well as DEL-LHR with ORD-DEL nonstop but the plan was dropped after 9.11. And RTW was suspended as well.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Hope this route will come back one day.

Regards.

Not correct. UAL did have LIMITED 5th freedom rights on the segments ex-DEL, constrained by a specific proportion of capacity that could be sold as standalone 5th freedom segments.

The route was reborn in 1999 and continued for slightly over a year until late 2000 with a new routing of LAX-IAD-LHR-DEL-HKG, this time with all legs except LHR-DEL being 747-400s

Again, not correct. The route was reborn in April 2001 and continued until September 2001. It was a 747-400 all the way through in both directions daily.

Could another US airline like Northwest Airlines or Delta Airlines which already fly to India fly the same 'Round The World Service.

OK, thanks for the corrections. I've lost track... didn't realize the second iteration was so short-lived. During late 2000/2001 United a slew of TERRIBLE decisions that contributed to the huge loss for 2001/2002... and many of these decisions were impractical "flagship" flights -- such as the RTW flights, JFK-HKG, and prior to JFK-HKG, LAX-MEL.

The press release was right here all along (click on the United Japan link).

"United first launched 'Round-the-World service in December 1995. In the fall of 1999, the airline temporarily suspended Delhi service due the Asian economic recession. "
