Singapore Airlines A345 Seating Configuration: 181

Fri May 02, 2003 9:38 am

Singapore Airlines Pte Limited is to inaugurate the Airbus A340-500 in early 2004.

My source indicates that the aircraft will have 64 Raffles Class beds and 117 Economy Class seats.

It is unclear whether these Economy seats will have more room and there is no Premium Economy Class.

Wow, that is pretty low. A 757 in 2-class configuration holds 180 seats.

The difference between First and those Sky beds is so infinitesimal.

Planned routes include nonstop SIN-LAX and I believe SIN-SFO.

There will be no First Class.

First route Singapore-Los Angeles and once daily will be followed by Singapore-New York, that is the current plan.

I think this 345 will complement the SIN-FRA-JFK service, otherwise they will loose out quite a fair bit amount of revenue on the FRA-JFK route. Hopefully things will sort out quickly, otherwise it'll not be profitable to start a non stop service to JFK.

And I suppose more space in Economy is rather obvious. If they still configure the economy at a 33' and Raffles at 60', the wouldn't it have a lot of unused space with only 181 seats?

RE: Can´t Be 181 In Total - Must Be 181 In Economy

Fri May 02, 2003 3:25 pm

There will be much more seats than a total of 181. Let´s say the aircraft will have 64 Raffles Skybed. They will be arranged with app 60" pitch. Using the Airbus layout examples for the A345, the aircraft will hold 30 seats between doors one and two. An additional 36 Raffles seats in the forward part of the cabin section between door two and three (bringing the total to 66 at 60" pitch). According to the Airbus layout example there should then remain room for 187 economy seats arranged in 32" pitch. 32" pitch is actually Economy Class standard on most SIA aircraft so my best guess will be (taken that the figure of 64 Raffles seats is correct) that SIA will operate the aircraft with 64 Raffles and 181 Economy - not 181 as the total number of seat. I don´t believe that the A345 would be economical to place into service with only 181 seats.

Is it true that due to the length of the flights that will be operated with these A345s, SIA has Econ Class configured in a more spacious and comofrtable layout than the current layouts that are prevelant in the rest of their fleet? I even heard rumors of a 2-3-2 lay out in Econ...but I havent a clue as to the validity of that.

We will only know when the A345 is launched into service, Andrew, if you're around somewhere, any insider info?

It's gotta be 181 Y seats...unless his sources or Singapore_Air is/are is not a credible source of information (which I think Singapore_Air is not).

I have questions based on the interiors of new Airbuses: Is it going to a sleek one that competes with the 777's interior, unlike the same old setup Airbus has in its 346 airplanes?

Oh, and 1 more thing...Sjc>sfo, you do hail from the USA, do you? You do not have any country information written below your nickname (From ___, joined May 2003)

"(which I think Singapore_Air is not)"

Yeah well you wouldn't. Stick it.

The source works very high up in Singapore Airlines' ranks so he is very credible.

The SpaceBed (The Skybed is used by some other airline) and the Economy Class seats will probably be allowed to take up mre space. Economy for example at a 35" seat pitch. 18 hours at 33" is unacceptable. 36" would be nice but might be too optimistic.

SIA should have some official release on their 345 products. It's been under the blankets for too long!

It may well be 181 total seats because they may have reserved certain areas of the aircraft for other uses and because the economy class will definitely have more than 32" pitch (perhaps closer to the region of 34-35") and because the economy seats may well be wider than normal.

The A346 has the new interior and not the old set up but IMO the 777 is still better looking. The A32X, A330-200/-300 and A340-300 all have updated interiors too. On the A320 the changes are minor only such as different overhead bin handles.

As Singapore Airlines did to another Airline and paid a hefty price for doing so in an out of court settlement.

It may be as few as 181 TOTAL (Raffles and Economy) because of some weight restriction on the routes. SIN-LAX and SIN-SFO are right at the edge of the plane's range capacity.

Does anyone know if the 777LR would be subject to similar, or any such restrictions? (Taste of things to come !!)
It is not enough to be rude; one must also be incorrect.

So wait, Singapore Airlines doesn't want to release any information unless Cathay copy them......yet you're releasing VERY important information about a new service Singapore are offering? Without an official press release and going from informational released to your personally from "someone high up" at SA?

Don't you think that's a bit stupid? You've just given away SA secret to Cathay.

What do you think a ticket on one of these flights will cost? I doubt that they would just be a normal priced ticket. SQ has to make money from operating the plane on these routes and with 181 seats, the seats would need to cost more to ride in. Do you think they would be a lot more expensive considering it is kind of a luxury to get from North America to Singapore without stopping, sort of like the Concorde (not as expensive though) with getting between Europe and North America in three and a half hours? Do you have any guess as to how much it would cost to fly one of these routes in economy and in business? I know it's impossible to guess for sure, but do you have a rough estimate?

I don't think it will be that expensive, Coach might be a little more because of the comfort of the seats on the A340-500
What now?

The non-stop is obviously geared towards business passengers, so I think the vast majority of these fares will be sold at full Y price.

If everything goes to plan, the 772LR will have a few hundred miles longer range and a significantly higher thrust-to-weight ratio than the A345; so it shouldn't be affected as badly.

This will however, only be possible for aircraft configured with all three optional auxillary fuel tanks: two of which are placed in the cargo hold and therefore amount to an automatic load restriction.

Without the extra fuel tanks, the 772LR is basically a 772ER with raked winglets, strengthened components, and a super-high MTOW (also, it may be approved for 330minute ETOPS if all goes to plan, a big advantage!)

Does anyone have confirmation of when the flight will depart SIN and return to SIN? I've heard conflicting reports so far, and I am very curious to find out which markets SIA is targeting.

Who is online
