Virgin Expansion

Fri May 02, 2003 12:10 pm

will virgin atlantic airways be expanding anytime soon to more cities in north america and asia. VS does have the aircraft to do so, how many more A346's do they have on order?

do you think VS can fly to YVR or SEA in US or BKK or KUL in Asia.

No, the LHR-KUL is a codeshare with MH.

Expansion is on hold at the moment at least to new destinations. When the market picks up again it is hoped that services to ORD and YYZ may start again having been dropped after 9/11. There have been rumours of services to YVR and also to Australia (via HKG probably) and the Middle East (DXB and Baghdad!). Also if the problems with the Air India codeshare can be sorted out then flights to Bombay may be on the cards.

We've got 6 more A340-600's on order (2 for delivery this year) but the -300's will start going back on a one for one basis as these arrive. So we don't really have any 'spare' a/c at the moment apart from the old Classics sitting in the desert which will probably be there until their leases expire sadly.

I really don’t see VS serving either BKK or KUL, unless as stop-over points for services to Australia.

Virgin is planning on starting flights to Australia and Branson has explicitly stated he wants HKG as the Asian stop-over point. He has also stated that Shanghai would be the alternative destination in the event Virgin is unable to successfully negotiate the rights for flights between HKG & Australia.

There are only two airlines that serve the lucrative high-yield HKG – Australia market, and they are CX & QF. Competition has decreased in this market & prices have gone up since the departure of Ansett because of the airline’s collapse, and VS is eager to capture the premium traffic. I really hope the negotiations are successful as this will be excellent news for both VS & HKG. HKG will finally attract a bigger piece of the Europe – Australia vv. market (SIN & BKK dominate this particular market) and VS will be only one of the handful of European airlines that fly to Australia.

Because of the SARS outbreak, any expansion plans to Asia (and hence, Australia) have obviously been delayed (probably until next year).

In the US I think restoring service to ORD is a priority, I think other potential North American destinations for Virgin are..

Seattle (good mix of business and vacationers), Vancouver, Philadelphia, Montreal, Phoenix.

Also perhaps Latin America..

Mexico City, Cancun, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires.

Australia is a given, at some point.

Well at least we can look forward to their caribbean expansion. We are expecting our inaugural flight to GND on Tuesday 6th May. LGW - TAB May5th... TAB-GND May6th.. GND-LGW May7th.

The usually schedule starting from May12th would be LGW-TAB-GND-TAB-LGW. Cleaning, catering and crew change would be in GND.
There is something special about planes....

Besides ORD & YYZ, what other destinations did VS suspend after 9/11?

Besides ORD and YYZ the LGW/LHR-ATH services were also stopped at the end of summer 01 but this was planned anyway due to Virgin Sun ceasing operations and not wanting to have a shorthaul fleet of 1 a/c. LGW-SFO, LGW-BOS and LGW-EWR services were also stopped although the BOS service was moved to LHR and EWR became 2x daily from LHR.

I would love to see Virgin start flights into YVR, as there is definitely demand to warrant a third airline on the route. This summer, Air Canada is flying YVR-LHR three times daily with B767s and British Airways is operating the route with one daily 747-400. There will also be charter flights into other London airports by HMY, SkyService and Air Transat.
