American Airlines Boeing MD-80?

Sun May 04, 2003 7:36 am

American is now referring their McDonnell Douglas MD-80's as "Boeing MD-80's" on their website...

http://www.aa.com/content/aboutAA/ourPlanes/ourPlanes.jhtml

So, if Boeing buys Airbus then do all those Airbus A330/340's become "Boeing 330/340's"? Are Chryslers now Mercedes?

It is not only an AA designation, but is now used worldwide. Boeing uses the "BoeingMcDD MD-80." AA usually refers to the M80s as "Super 80s"

Bottomline: This is just like Boeing 717 (change from MD-95) they want the brand recognition!

I'm waiting to read about a "Boeing" DC-3. I've already heard McDonnell Douglas DC-3 and DC-8 though both are wrong as is Boeing DC-9-80. Type certificates do not change. The official designation is, and shall remain McDonnell-Douglas DC-9-8x, Douglas DC-8-xx and Douglas DC-3.

Aq737, the 717-200 was certified after Boeing bought McDD so that is a bit different.

I'm waiting to read about a "Boeing" DC-3.

Sadly, ATC has been referring to DC-3's as Boeing's since the takeover. Even back in 1998 flying a friend's DC-3 we'd be getting identified as such (not that my friend would ever say anything other than "Douglas")  Smile

For me it is still an excellent MDD aircraft. Perhaps they also think that the Boeing designation sounds more enthusiastic than McDonnell Douglas.

By the way, Alitalia still has their Super 80 proudly painted on the engine nacelle!!

Keep on flying Douglas Jets!

How many AA MD-80s were made by Boeing (after the merger)?

United_Fan, there is no Boeing MD-11. You must be referring to the Boeing program to convert pax MD-10's into freighters for FedEx. Once Boeing completes the conversion of a McDonnell Douglas DC-10, it then becomes a Boeing MD-10.
