Fate Of The 777-250ERX?

Mon May 05, 2003 9:18 am

What has become of the proposed 777-250ERX?

Is it still under study/consideration? Has it been silently cancelled?

For those of you that might not remember it: around November 2002, Boeing announced plans of a possible frame stretch for an aircraft 225ft long with a range of 8637mi, facilitated by the same GE90-11B1s which are (or perhaps, were) the powerplant for the 772LR as well. The general buzz-from-the-bees was that this model would be geared toward the USA carriers... none of whom felt they could justify the 773A/ER, but many of whom still needed something slightly larger than the 772 for transoceanic travel.

Anyone know anything recent about this proposal? Hamlet?

As far as I know, it is still only a 'working concept.' In other words, its an idea that is being studied fairly low-key. I doubt we will see anything come of this for a number of years yet. Eventually, however, I could see this aircraft pursued in order to distance the current 777-200ER away from the proposed 7E7 Stretch.

In other words, don't hold your breath.

As always, thanks for being on top of the issue.

I figured not to expect much from this... as well as the talk that Boeing was reconsidering a stretched 777-400X as well.

I think it's more likely that once the US airlines get back on their feet it'll be more likely that they'll end up ordering the 777-300ER instead. The most likely customers--CO and UA.

IIRC, CO actually ruled out both the 773(A & ER) and a GE90 upgrade in 2000.

And that was considered one of the good years... I dont think we'll see them ordering Boeing's most expensive aircraft any time soon.

I could however see a small 772LR order by them to fortify their HKG service if it comes back strongly... perhaps even Houston-Australia someday (yeah, I know; go easy on the sleeping pills  Laugh out loud)
