DeltaASA16,

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but unless the rules have changed since I was instructing, you cannot log PIC until you have your license. Your time (again, if the rules still apply) is logged as "solo" time, not PIC.

I only point this out to save you a lot of erasing and recalculations when the time comes to apply for airlines...It made my logbook look like CRAP! Smile

P.S.
Roughly 6000 for me.

PPS
Congrats on the solo and best of luck with the training. You don't realize it now, but what you are doing now is just about the most fun you will ever have in an airplane. Enjoy every minute of it.

Hey hey, that's one great thing about Europe, I can say that I have roughly 20 hours (more like 19), with 10 minutes as PIC

Flydeltajets: I completely understand what you are saying. In my log book, it has "Pilot in Command includes solo" So, I was told to put it there.

Thanks

Yeah....they've changed the rules to where your solo time during your private phase counts as PIC as well. I dont even keep track of solo time after my pvt... my log still says 11.3-and that's tagged into the PIC column. After i went over to the Jepp pro pilot logbook that has the two separated, it would have been too much of a pain to figure out when i was really by myself and when i had a friend up with me or something. Sometimes I was with someone...sometimes I was by myself.  Smile

Dash 80...yea...Ive had to take several long hiatuses from flying for various reasons and the turnover ratio at my FBO for CFI's is pretty high so consequently Ive had 5 instructors and many aimlessly repeated lessons...I just started flying again after a 9 month hiatuses though...I was ready to take my ride in September but bad weather cancelled it and I then had to go on hiatus so I just have a bit of catch up and then Im set...Im pretty sure that by the end of the month Ill have taken my ride...

I'm at 30 hours now, 10 PIC. I'm training to get my PPL next year. I fly every once in a while, I space out my flights. I soloed on April 9th of this year, it was an experince I'll never forget. I also soloed last Saturday (May 3rd) which consisted of heavy winds, which made it very fun! 10 more hours, and then eventually I'll take the dreaded checkride! All this done in a Cessna 172 and Piper Warrior.

Heh, yep, its come up before. First time I'd heard of there being discussion over it, my first thought was "well, if the solo student isn't PIC...then there are airplanes flying around without pilots in command?"

I used to make the same argument, but the feds, in their infinite wisdom, kept the rule for a long time. Their response was that if the person at the controls was not technically a pilot, then how could he be pilot in command?

It was a silly technicality, and I'm glad to see it was changed. Thanks for letting me know.

DeltaASA16,

Paid for the majority of them. I have family and friends that own their own aircraft. It is just one of those things that getting a loan to pay for about 1000 hours and then I work to pay for flying out of an FBO. Half of mypaycheck goes to pay for the school straight from payroll so I never see it.

Airbus1,

Could you tell us about your flying lesson in more detail? I didn't fly on 9/11, but I always wondered what it would have been like to hear something like "Land immediately due to national security" on the radio.

I have about 465 hours in my logbook. I really think many of the FAA's policies regarding logging flight time is really dumb. At least they took a step in the right direction when they permitted students to log PIC when they are flying solo. I mean, duh! If you're not the pilot in command when you're flying solo, then who is?!?!?

Did you know that if you're a commercial pilot serving as PIC, but your buddy is manipulating the controls, you can't log that as PIC? How dumb.
Last year 1,944 New Yorkers saw something and said something.

23,000+, most in heavy jets, over 35+ years.

Met a pilot (joined same company) who claimed 33,000. He was 51 at the time, a Canadian and suspect it was quite true as the flew DC3's and C46's during DEW line construction, for a long time.
Some of these (younger) folks at the time flew 15 hours per day...everyday.
No flight time restrictions then for that operation.
This fellow was one of the best stick&rudder pilots that I have ever met.
Handled a 15 ton (33,000 pound) lateral fuel imbalance on takeoff...a situation that would have been a disaster with most folks.
Experience pays.

MD88Captain,

How can you not keep a logbook?

The rules as far as I know (JAA - Europe) say you must record every flight. Is this not the case in the USA?

Don't you have the currency requirement in order to be able to carry passengers? (3 takeoffs and landings in that particular type/variant in the last 3 months as sole manipulator of the controls.. or something along those lines)

In which case, no matter how many hours total you had, you would be expected to prove you are 'current'.

Or is it different in the USA?

Thanks for clearing that up...

Ben
